The Washington, DC, Independent Media Center, or "DC Indymedia," is a group of individuals who consider themselves a part of a global collective of media makers and news gatherers, loosely organized and committed to using various mediums to share news about social justice on a local and global scale. We seek to build an alternative network of media coverage that is free of corporate interests (that's where the "independent" comes in).
We are dedicated to reporting on issues that have an impact on the environment, our communities, and the right to political self-determination. We want to show the world what real democracy looks like. Become a part of a media revolution. Don't hate the media, be the media!
This packet lists resources that might be useful to independent journalists coming to Washington, DC. for protests and other events. During large events and convergences, we often publish a version of this media kit that includes a current calendar of events and other timely information. This version of the packet only includes basic logistical information that is not tied to any particular event.
This packet will help you find: inexpensive housing, cheap food with vegetarian and vegan options, audio and video supplies, photo developing, and public internet access. There is also a street map and a metro map of DC.
Most of the work of the DC-IMC is done within media working groups, which focus on different types of media (video, audio, photo, print, tech, editorial). The best way to plug in is via one of the working groups. Information on the current activities of each working group, how to join their email lists, and how to contact each working group is listed at
<dc.indymedia.org/info/display/get_involved/>.

Washington, DC 20001
We recently moved into a new office in the
Flemming Center, in the
Shaw neighborhood of
NW DC. Look for a link in the left column of the website to our schedule of public hours and meetings. The DC IMC holds general meetings approximately every other
Monday. New people are always welcome.
You can publish your own story, photos, video or audio clips on the newswire. We have an openpublishing newswire, so whatever you publish will show up immediately in the right column of the website. We especially encourage stories on local issues in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Look for the
"publish your article" link at the top of the website if you have original material that you would like to post.
The DC IMC relies on money raised from donations and small fundraisers. We need your help to maintain our office space, obtain computer and media equipment, and keep our website running.
Please consider making a tax-deductible financial contribution (even small amounts help) or an inkind donation of computer or media equipment. For more information or to make an online donation, visit <dc.indymedia.org/info/display/support/>.

This saves time of scanning or using the dark room before uploading your pictures to the newswire. Many places will let you get only negatives developed if you ask

Metro trains do not run 24 hours. Trains start at about 5:00 am on weekdays, and 7:00 am on weekends. The last train is at about midnight, except on Fridays and Saturdays when it is at about 3:00 am. Times vary by station, so make sure you check the schedule if you need to use the Metro late at night. Buses also run through DC and surrounding suburbs.
Metro rail fares are between $1.20 and $2.30 each way, depending on distance. Most trips within DC are $1.20. Fares are higher during weekday rush hours. A daily pass is $6, and a weekly pass is $20. Fare card machines in metro stations take credit cards.
If you're coming from out-of-town: please note that Metro has very strict rules prohibiting eating, drinking, smoking, or littering in Metro stations or on trains. If you are caught doing any of those things, you risk getting a substantial ticket, or even getting arrested. Recently, an officer handcuffed a 12-year old girl for eating a french fry in a Metro station. Be careful!!
