Jerome High School Fine Arts Department The Jerome High School Art Department is under the tutorship of Mr. Keith Farnsworth, who this fall was named the 2008 Idaho Art Teacher of the Year by the Idaho Arts Education Association. JHS has some amazing art students that have produced a variety of high quality 2-D and 3-D works this year. Junior and Senior art students are continuing to build up their portfolios for future use. There are four students working on the A.P. portfolio, which is a major undertaking. They have also had some very strong Draw I students that will be a great addition to next year’s advanced classes. The JHS Tiger Troupe is in the middle of a very successful season. The competitive drama team won the District IV Championship, taking home 18 of the 39 trophies awarded, and qualifying 16 acts to the state tournament. The team had 4 finalists, with state champions in Solo Audition, and Humorous Original, and State Runner-up in Solo Pantomime. The Tiger Troupe performed a successful run of A Christmas Carol, and will be performing “An Evening with Shakespeare” on March 2, and a full musical production, Guys and Dolls April 30-May 2. The Tiger Troupe is directed by Shane Brown in his fifth year at Jerome High School, serving as Theatre Director, Language Arts Chair, and Academic Decathlon coach. Mr. Brown was named Drama Teacher of the Year, for the second time, by the Idaho Speech Arts Teachers Association, for which he also serves on the executive board. In addition Mr. Brown directed and acted in a production of The Laramie Project for Random Acts of Theatre, which had two runs—one in the summer of 2008, and one in January 2009—with all proceeds going to charity. The award-winning Jerome High School Choral Program has been led by Karen Palmer for the past three years. Originally from Oregon, Karen has felt right at home in Idaho with her husband, Josh, and her two year old son, Jacob. Palmer baby #2 is “baking in the oven”, so to speak. Last year, the Concert Choir and Divisi (formerly known as Advanced Choir) each placed first in their respective categories at the Music in the Parks festival in Utah. In addition, they received high marks at the District IV large group festival in Burley. There is a new addition to the choir program this year: the Chamber Singers, JHS’s second auditioned and all women ensemble. Divisi and Chamber Singers have major performances coming up, including the BSU Vocal Jazz festival (Divisi) and the ISU Women’s Choir Invitational (Chamber Singers). All of the JHS choir students are looking forward to opportunities to display their performance excellence (not to mention a 2010 trip to Disneyland). But, most importantly, the students are becoming increasingly proud of their work as the community and surrounding areas look to them for performance excellence. The Jerome High School Instrumental Music program is in its third year under the baton of Mr. Gordon P. Smith. The Symphonic Band, performing tonight, gained regional recognition last year with its performance alongside the Dallas Brass. The Pep Band is recognized as one of the most dynamic and entertaining basketball bands in southern Idaho, with a wide repertoire of music and dances. And the Ambush of Tigers Marching Band and Color Guard have traveled to Washington, Oregon, California, and throughout Idaho, ranking in the top ten in the state at the 4A level again this fall with their innovative version of “West Side Story”. Growing from forty members three years ago to the eighty-six who marched this year, the Ambush is currently creating a unique show for 2009 entitled “AFTERMATH”, depicting the reconstruction of civilization following a nuclear war. Mr. Smith was selected as Idaho’s representative in School Band & Orchestra magazine’s “50 Directors Who Make A Difference” for 2008, and is the incoming president of the Idaho District IV Music Educators.
