Pakuranga College Arts Department Level 2 Design THIS UNIT IS ASSESSED USING A STANDARD THAT EXPIRED AT THE END OF 2012 AS 90474 Version 2 2.1 Design Submission check list: At least 3 x A4 pages of critical comment. TASK 2: Research Methods and Ideas in creating a graphic portrait. You will have approximately 10 hours for this task, plus homework. This task requires you to create a pictorial portrait of one of the following occupations: A dancer A singer A fortune teller An artist A musician Fashion designer An acrobat Barrister A clown Body Builder A magician Ice Hockey A rock climber player A chef Lollies An architect Designer Game designer Actor / Actress A character of your choice (with consultation with your teacher Research 1. 2. Research images from books, the internet, magazines, photographs to be able to record information in your visual diary until you find something that offers a range of ideas for graphic images. You will choose at least 2 possibilities from the list and investigate them further through drawing and collating information from various sources. You must be certain that your final selection, which you will use in response to the brief, has been well researched for its visual potential. Research different types of letterforms, looking for appropriate fonts and styles to integrate with your image. You could print these from the computer, or carefully hand-draw them. Application Brief: Combine the initial letter of the name of a person with an image of your chosen occupation. The combined image must work as a logo, i.e. a strong graphic image that communicates its intent well. Use black and white and one other colour if preferred. In your Visual Arts Diary complete the following: Sketch a minimum of 30 ideas. Parts of the pencilled rectangular shape can be removed if necessary in the development of your ideas. Approximately 15 of the rectangles should deal to aspects of the image alone, while the remainder should consider a variety of ways of combining the image with upper and lower case letterforms. (You may extend beyond the rectangle if necessary). Use your research to inform your work. Consider the success of the positive / negative relationships of your design. Consider the effectiveness of your image as a visual communication device. Pakuranga College Arts Department Level 2 Design THIS UNIT IS ASSESSED USING A STANDARD THAT EXPIRED AT THE END OF 2012 AS 90474 Version 2 2.1 Design Your best solution needs to be executed on a larger scale (approximately 20cm x 15cm) on a separate page. Submission check list: 1. At least 2 X A4 pages of research of your selected personality. 2. At least 2 X A4 pages of research into letterforms. 3. At least 6 X A4 pages of ideas developing your graphic portrait. 4. Your best solution executed on a full A4 page. Pakuranga College Arts Department Level 2 Design THIS UNIT IS ASSESSED USING A STANDARD THAT EXPIRED AT THE END OF 2012 AS 90474 Version 2 2.1 Design TASK 3: Explore Methods and Ideas through Drawing You will have 10 class hours plus homework time for this task. This task requires you to create a graphic work that communicates using imagery. You will not have the advantage of using text to help you communicate your idea. Research In your Visual Arts Diary, collect at least 4 images of existing designs that communicate an action (sing, chop, dance, swing). Look at button designs and evaluate how the elements of design contribute to the effectiveness of the image. Application Brief: Create a action portrait which functions as a symbolic image that will convey information without the use of text. You must base your image on your selected occupation. The image will be used on a button that would be given out to audience attending an event that features your personality. You must use black, white and one other colour. You will create a pictorial portrait that reflects one of the following occupations: A dancer A rock climber A fortune teller A chef A musician An architect An acrobat A character of your choice (with consultation with your A clown teacher) A magician Brainstorm ideas that could be used for a graphic portrait based on your chosen occupation. Consider including an instrument / equipment that could enhance the characteristic of your design. You can introduce elements of humour into your design or be serious in your approach. Consider both aspects in your generation of ideas. Use thumbnail sketches to visualise your ideas. Select 2 ideas from your research, which have potential for further development. Develop your ideas (using Design processes and methods) onto 2 pages of your Visual Arts Diary, working with shapes and colours that are appropriate (at least 8 thumbnail concepts showing experimentation and refinements of ideas). Submission check list: 1. At least 2 X A4 pages of research on button designs. 2. At least 2 x A4 pages brainstorming your ideas. 3. At least 2 x A4 pages of ideas showing process, through thumbnail sketches. 4. At least 1 x A4 pages containing finished images. Pakuranga College Arts Department Level 2 Design THIS UNIT IS ASSESSED USING A STANDARD THAT EXPIRED AT THE END OF 2012 AS 90474 Version 2 2.1 Design TASK 4: Apply Research of Methods and Ideas to Design You will have approximately 15 class hours plus homework for this task. In this task you will create an image based on your chosen occupation – combining image and text. You can consider using Mies van der Rohe’s idea, ‘Less is More’, by suggesting its character, rather than directly depicting it. You could do this by: o Simplifying the physical characteristics of your chosen personality into flat negative and positive shapes that appears in just black and white o Cropping the original design that you simplified (in 1) o Crop the design in ‘1’ drastically, until it is almost not recognizable You must respond towards the feel and characteristic that you intend to build into your chosen occupation. Words relating to your chosen occupation and your response to it will be used to enhance the meaning you want to communicate. You need to use the full name of the person or his/her initials together with suitable image/images. As part of this task you will be learning how to use PhotoShop. Research i) In your A4 visual diary research and gather imagery, (hand-drawn, photographic, textures etc), and list words on all aspects of your chosen character that are appropriate to this task. (You may use imagery and ideas from any of your previous research tasks). ii) Research different types of letterforms, looking for appropriate fonts and styles to integrate with your image. You could print these from the computer, or carefully hand-draw them. iii) Look at the work of contemporary designers to select 4 different examples that image and text can be combined. Make your selection based on the elements and ideas that you can apply in your own work. Include these examples in your diary. iv) Brainstorm possible approaches for your image with text. v) Include all notes on PhotoShop use in your diary for future references . You will cover the following areas in your tutorials: File management, Image size and Resolution. Selecting. Using layers. Scanning. Type. Saving. Printing. Pakuranga College Arts Department Level 2 Design THIS UNIT IS ASSESSED USING A STANDARD THAT EXPIRED AT THE END OF 2012 AS 90474 Version 2 2.1 Design Application Brief: You are to create an A4 image with text that combines the visual characteristics with your personal response to your selected occupation. The final design will be part of a magazine layout for an article about the person that you chose. You need to base your ideas on the research that you have done (from previous tasks) to help create your design solution. Appropriate imagery, (from your research), will be scanned into the computer and you will develop your ideas using PhotoShop techniques. Instructions: 1. You will need to choose appropriate typefaces that best express the personality of your selected character. 2. You need to consider the typeface style, letter spacing, and use of uppercase and lowercase characters. Use thumbnail sketches to visualise your ideas. 3. Pay attention to the actual size and placement of your name in the rectangle. The size of the rectangle is 12 cm X 8 cm. 4. You should use only black and white. Use colour ONLY if it is an important integral of your concept. Submission check list: At least 2 x A4 diary pages on researching imagery and text.
