GRADUATE INTERDISCIPLINARY MINOR IN HERITAGE STUDIES The Heritage Studies Minor (HSM) is sponsored by the Collaborative for Cultural Heritage and Museum Practices (CHAMP) and approved by the university administration. The HSM does not require prior practical experience in heritage work for admission. Rather, students must be admitted to the graduate program of an academic department in order to participate in the HSM. Students already enrolled in one of the graduate programs at the University of Illinois also may apply for admission to the HSM at any time, but are advised to do so in their first year of study. Admission for the HSM is contingent upon the approval of the student’s home department. A student interested in the HSM should inform the HSM Steering Committee of the intent to pursue the Minor and begin a course of study that will satisfy the requirements. The HSM Steering Committee regularly reviews student progress in consultation with the student’s academic advisor. The HSM introduces graduate students to a range of approaches in heritage theory and practice, drawing from Anthropology, Landscape Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, Architecture, History, Geography, Education, Library Science, and other fields. HSM students are strongly encouraged to obtain actual field experience in heritage work during their graduate studies at the University of Illinois.
