BROWN SWISS DAIRY CATTLE BREEDER’S
ESSAY CONTEST
for 4-H and FFA members
POLICY STATEMENT BY THE OKLAHOMA BROWN SWISS CATTLE
BREEDERS’ ASSOCIATION:
The purpose of this contest is to encourage the growth and development
of Brown Swiss dairy cattle principally through the 4-H and FFA programs in
Oklahoma. One registered Brown Swiss heifer will be awarded. Junior exhibitors
who do not own Brown Swiss are eligible as are those who own Brown Swiss
cattle. Previous winners are not eligible to apply. This is to encourage new 4-H
and FFA members to breed and develop Brown Swiss dairy cattle. Also, contest
winners will be required to breed the heifer to a registered Browns Swiss bull.
Winners are expected to present a report on the progress of their heifer at the
annual winter Oklahoma Brown Swiss Cattle Breeder’s Association meeting. This
report may be given orally, or a written report sent to the breed secretary if the
winner is unable to attend.
Contestants must not be in their senior year of high school as there is a
required two (2) year period of ownership during which the winner must compete
as a junior showman twice each year in two of the major Oklahoma Dairy Shows.
If during the required two (2) year period of ownership the contest winner
should withdraw from participation in the 4-H or FFA program, the Brown Swiss
breeder of the heifer calf has the option to repurchase said calf from the youth at
the amount not to exceed Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00).
Contestants’ essays must be in their own handwriting accompanied by a
completed questionnaire and mailed to the Oklahoma Brown Swiss Breeder’s
Association Youth Program Co-Chairs (addresses below) no later than May 31,
2005. The calf will be awarded to the winner of the essay contest during the
Brown Swiss Field day in June 2005.
