Book of the Faithful Departed Traditionally, during the month of November, we remember and pray for, in a special way, all our deceased loved ones. The Church encourages you to continue this tradition by entering the names of that dear to you in the BOOK OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED. If your loved ones’ names were already entered in the book in previous years, they are still in the book and will be prayed for during our liturgies. This book has been placed at the back of the church for the whole month of November and we invite you, if you wish, to enter the names of those members of your family or friends who you would like to be remembered and prayed for by our church. CATECHISM UPDATE Please be advised that all families participating in our catechism program must be registered as a family with St. Bernard’s Church. At this time of year when it takes more motivation to go out in the cold, we want to thank the parishioners who offer the gift of their time and presence in many ways to care for others. Working at The Karing Kitchen, preparing and serving food at Circle of Friends and for bereaved families at funerals, calling and visiting the sick and housebound, knitting warm items for the Advent Tree, helping prepare and deliver the Christmas boxes, participating in local organizations to support those struggling with poverty and discrimination; all of these and more are done by parishioners to serve God's people with dedication and love. Supporting the Karing Kitchen For over 25 years, the Karing Kitchen has been serving a hot meal from Mon. to Fri. at noontime to the homeless and needy. For many individuals this is their only opportunity to interact with others. Currently the Karing Kitchen is serving into the thousands of meals each month. A sign of the face of poverty is that many children are among the number ministered to in this way. St. Bernard's has been an ongoing supporter of the Karing Kitchen, and one of the annual events we have participated in is, 'Let's Do Lunch'. You will see the little red cards at the church entrances. You can send these to a friend or family member and the note on the card says that a donation to the meals has been made in their honor. Then you fill out the white paper inside the card and put it and your donation in an envelope marked Karing Kitchen and place it in the collection basket at mass. We will deliver these envelopes to the Karing Kitchen. Thank you from the hungry of the downtown area. FALL CONFERENCE. BERNARD'S ADVENT PENITENTIAL SERVICE Reconciliation, the forgiveness of sins has been an essential aspect of the teachings of the Lord Jesus, and of the Church’s mission from the outset. Over the centuries, the way Christians approached the sacrament has changed. The early Church dealt harshly with sinners; forgiveness and reconciliation were public signs. Then, for many centuries penitents would encounter a priest, make their confession of sins, receive a penance and be absolved in this one encounter. We continue to offer time for individuals to celebrate the sacrament prior to Liturgy on Saturday afternoons, or any other time upon request at the office. This year for our preparation for Christmas, we will offer ONE communal celebration for our Parish Unit, similar to what we have had in the past, for families, adults and children. Since absolution cannot be given communally, priests will be available to meet penitents individually. This will take place on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 15th at 2:00 PM at St. Bernard’s.
