Clinical Audiologist, Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital, Tucson, Arizona Ms. Cozzi received her BS in Communicative Disorders from the University of Wisconsin, her MS in Audiology from the University of Arizona, and her Doctor of Audiology from STILL, Arizona School of Health Sciences in Mesa Arizona. At Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital Ms. Cozzi functions as a clinical and educational audiologist providing a full range of diagnostic and rehabilitative services. The multidisciplinary team at Carondelet consists of 3 audiologists and 4 physical therapists, as well a physician consultants in the areas of ENT, neurology, vascular, and ophthalmology. Recently, Ms. Cozzi collaborated in the establishment of a Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program and developed an interoperative monitoring program for ENT and neurosurgery procedures. As an educational audiologist, Ms. Cozzi provides comprehensive evaluations, classroom assessments and consultation to multidisciplinary team members. Ms. Cozzi is a founding board member of Arizona Hands and Voices, is an American Academy of Audiology Fellow a member of the Vestibular Disorders Association and is a certified member of the American Speech, Language & Hearing Association. Brett Rachal, PT Director of Physical Medicine, St. Francis Hospital, Monroe, LA Mr. Rachal received his BS in Occupational Education from Wayland Baptist University and his BS in Physical Therapy from University of Texas Health Science Center. He serves as adjunct faculty in the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at Bossier Parish Community College. Mr. Rachal established the St. Francis Balance Center and, for the past ten years, has been the Director of Acute Inpatient and Outpatient Rehabilitation Services and Pediatric Rehabilitation. Each program utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to care that includes occupational, physical, and speech therapy as well as audiologists and physicians. As a featured speaker at the St. Francis Orthopedic Symposium Mr. Rachal delivered a continuing education program focused on balance and fall prevention. Mr. Rachal has served as the Treasurer and District Chairman of the Louisiana Physical Therapy Association and is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association. The best patient outcomes are the result of careful, comprehensive assessment and focused treatment planning by a multidisciplinary team including both audiology and physical therapy. Each discipline brings a unique perspective to the task, and understanding the contribution of various team members is a key step to implementation of the team approach. This course will be presented by an audiologist and a physical therapist, each currently working in a multidisciplinary setting. The course will include a review of the assessment protocols used, the treatment planning process, and the monitoring of patient outcomes used by the respective teams represented by the presenters. Course Objectives: Participants will be familiar with Vestibular site-of-lesion assessment procedures used by audiologists in evaluating patients with dizziness complaints, including history & physical exam, VNG, audiometric special tests, & rotary chair procedures. Balance assessment protocols routinely used by physical therapist in evaluating patients with complaints of dizziness or unsteadiness, including history and physical examination, observational scales, objective measures of balance performance, and self-rating scales of perceived handicap. A treatment planning process that includes both site-of-lesion clinical tests and assessment of balance function by a multi-disciplinary team. The use of repeat assessment methods used to monitor patient progress and determine treatment effectiveness.
