Gingers of Thailand

Gingers belong to one of the most important components of the ground cover of the
tropical forests of SEAsia. They are also found at high altitudes in the mountains as well as in
rubber plantations and bamboo thickets in the lowlands . There are very few plant
communities in this part of the world that are without Gingers. One of the “ hot spots ” for
these beautiful plants is the continental monsoon region of Asia, and here Thailand plays a
major role as home for one of the worlds most diversified Ginger floras.
Until now the knowledge of these highly ornamental plants has mainly been known
to a limited audience through scientific publications and only few species have found their
way to tropical gardens. This is the first book on the Thai Ginger flora written for nonspecialists by two botanists who have worked for almost 50 years exploring not only
Gingers but the forest community of Thailand from North to South.
It is hoped with this book a new world of beauty will be opened up. A book that tells
not only how much we have discovered during the last decades but also the many questions
that still remain to be solved.
With over 300 species of Gingers, Thailand harbours not only a treasure of immense
value, but also a treasure that is highly endangered. This generation has a great responsibility
in conserving Thai biodiversity and hopefully this book can also be helpful in this respect.

About the authors
Kai Larsen, Professor emeritus, founder and former director of the Botanical Institute,
University of Aarhus, Denmark. This institute has specialized in research in tropical forests
worldwide. Dr. Larsen has worked in Thailand for almost half a century in close
collaboration with the Royal Forest Department and studied Zingiberaceae during four
decades. He is co-author of Flora of Thailand and member of the Flora Malesiana Board,
Leiden. He is co-author of Zingiberaceae to Flora of China, former President of the
International Association of Botanical Gardens and honorary board member of Queen Sirikit
Botanic Garden. He is member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters and of
the Norwegian Science Academy.
Supee Saksuwan Larsen is a M.Sc. from the Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok,
Thailand and former scientific staff member of the Department of Botany same place. Since
1971 research associate at the Botanical Institute, University of Aarhus, Denmark. She has,
together with her husband, professor Kai Larsen participated in several expeditions and
journeys to the tropics, particularly to Thailand. She has specialized in pollen research and
taxonomy of Leguminosae especially the genus Bauhinia which genus she has revised for
floras in tropical Asia. For the last decade she has joined her husband in studying Gingers.
She is collaborator to Flora Malesiana, Flore du Cambodge, du Laos et du Vietnam and flora
of China.
