Introduction Agriculture Pollution Control Project (APCP) is carried out in Croatia in order to reduce runoff of nutrients derived from agriculture into surface and groundwater, and to disseminate good agriculture practices which are environmentally friendly. The project is being implemented in 3 counties: Varaždinska, Osječko-baranjska and Vukovarsko-srijemska. In order to obtain actual situation of agriculture in these counties, a questionnaire to farmers engaged in livestock production is made. The main objective of this document is to present the state of farms in the project counties before assignment of project funds. Questionnaires were entered into the database from which many interesting data were filtered. 5 APCP - Survey – Paying Agency for Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development - Croatia 2009. CONCLUSION Through questionnaires for farms 327 farmers in three Project counties were examined. The average age is 44,95≈45. Most of the farms are familiy agricultural holdings (261) with cows/heifers and pigs/sows. Most cultivated cultures are: corn, wheat, foraging cultures, grass mixtures, barley and oil crops. Number of respondents who meet the criteria of the Project according to the number of animals is: - Cows – 172 - Pigs – 59 - Sows – 11 - Broilers – 9 204 respondents are planning a farm upgrade. Of equipment, more than half of respondents have a loader for manure, spreader for manure and cisterns. There are 208 adapted/old objects, and only 101 new built objects (in last 5 years). Soil analysis is made by only 100 respondents. Most of farmers uses manure from farm for fertilization of their own land. As far as manure storage facilities is concerned, only 25 farmers have good solution in manure storage. Even 144 of them storaging manure on the ground. Our goal is to change the habits of farmers and reduce runoff of nitrates from agricultural sources to surface and groundwater, as much as possible. Also it is very important that farmers adopt the measures of good agricultural practices which are environment friendly. 31
