Architecture Open Lecture Series
The annual Open Lecture Series organised by the School of Architecture and the Portsmouth
Architecture School Society starts in October 2008.
The theme of this year’s lecture series is multidiscipline. Practicing architects from all over
the country are invited to come and share their experience, architectural ideas and
philosophy with staff and students.
Semester one’s speakers include EuroPan winner 08 Tom Russell, 2008 RIBA Award winners
Wilkinson King and Stanton Williams as well as Bryan Avery from Avery Architects - winner
of the 2008 Museums & Heritage Award for innovative design and interpretation in
museums and galleries.

Opening this year’s lecture series is our Head of School with proof that lecturers don't just
teach, they design too! Presenting his own approach to architecture and his dream to build
his own home; a labour of love for any architect, Tod will illustrate design concept,
construction and realisation.

Bryan Avery has a wide-ranging love of architectural history from Frank Lloyd Wright to Sir
John Soane. He moves across disciplines and has won acclaim for graphic and product
design as well as for buildings and planning.

Stanton Williams emphasise the experience of place by people. Current projects range from
the development of a Grade II listed Granary Building for Central St Martins' at the heart of
the Kings Cross development, to the new ceramics galleries at the Victoria and Albert
Museum.

Tom Russell Architects was founded in 2001 and have social and environmental
sustainability at their heart. The Bristol-based practice has won the RIBA Lawrenny EcoVillage Competition with a project that sets out to challenge the current emphasis on
generic 'one-size fits all' eco-homes and to offer a new model that responds to local
conditions.EuroPan winner 08.

Thursday 4 December Julian King of Wilkinson King Architects

Wilkinson King Architects is a design based practice that is developing a portfolio of work
covering a broad range of project types. They plan to synthesise these projects into an
architecture that is sensitive and responsive to current issues. Recent project is include the
award-winning Baden Powell Outdoor Centre on Brownsea Island inspired by the form of a
ridge-pole tent and energy self-sufficient. They have conceptual approach to architecture
and their built form is often extended and looks to 'take-in' external space. RIBA Award
2008, Wessex region.
