DI Learning Plan Name of Activity: Writing Messages in Binary Unit: 13- Operating Systems and Binary Code Course: Introduction to Digital Technology Activity: 13.1 Standards/KuDos KNOW: Students will know how the alphabet and basic numbers are translated into binary code. UNDERSTAND: Students will understand the relation of words and numbers to specific strands of binary code. BE ABLE TO DO: Students will be able to translate messages to and from binary code. Pre-Assessment/Formative Assessment Notes Teacher will introduce assignment. They will give a brief definition of what binary code is. Finally they will direct students to the assignment to begin. How Will They Learn __x__ Single strategy that engages all: _____ more than one modality (auditory, visual, kinesthetic) Students will open the “Binary Cheat Sheet” (document provided) to get familiar with what codes go with letters and numbers. They will go through the assignment page and decipher the example binary strand. Finally, they will create their own binary code message and swap them with classmates. Application Activities ____ Same for all _____ More than one learning preference (MI) _____ other _x__ tier by learning preference ____ tier by readiness ____ tier by challenge/complexity Students can create a short simple message or a more complex one that requires more time and effort to translate. Independent Application __x__ individual work _____ tier by challenge/complexity ____ tier by readiness ____ student choice based on interest _____ with a partner _____ in a small group (MI) Students will create their own code to trade with other students in order to become better versed in binary code. Page 1 of 2 Closure ____ activity ____ review: ____ question and answer ____ critical reflection __x__ sharing of products _____ question posing ____ exit slips ____ other The students will trade their codes with other students in order to get more practice with translating binary code. They should be encouraged to try codes that are slightly more complex than theirs in order to advance their understanding. Post Assessment Have the students discuss the difficulties they had with translating binary code messages and any tricks they used to help remember the codes for letters or numbers. Teacher can determine what projects are assessed and whether they want to add more activities to this lesson. Page 2 of 2
