KNOW: Students will know how the alphabet and basic numbers are translated into binary code.
UNDERSTAND: Students will understand the relation of words and numbers to specific strands of binary code.
BE ABLE TO DO: Students will be able to translate messages to and from binary code.

Teacher will introduce assignment.
They will give a brief definition of what binary code is.
Finally they will direct students to the assignment to begin.
How Will They Learn

Students will open the “Binary Cheat Sheet” (document provided) to get familiar with what codes go with
letters and numbers.
They will go through the assignment page and decipher the example binary strand.
Finally, they will create their own binary code message and swap them with classmates.

The students will trade their codes with other students in order to get more practice with translating binary
code.
They should be encouraged to try codes that are slightly more complex than theirs in order to advance their



Have the students discuss the difficulties they had with translating binary code messages and any tricks they
used to help remember the codes for letters or numbers.
Teacher can determine what projects are assessed and whether they want to add more activities to this
lesson.
