GPH 210 World Regional Geography Map Exercises Dr. Richard L. Langill Saint Martin’s University 1 GPH 210 World Regional Geography Map Exercises All students are expected to complete the maps in this packet. The due date for these exercises is listed in the syllabus. A blank map of each region is included in these materials. Students must complete as part of this class. Collectively these will count 20% of your grade. Directions for Completing the Map Exercises Students must follow the directions below: All countries, cities and physical features must be located on the enclosed maps Students need to purchase several colored pens to complete these exercises The blue pen should be used to locate all water bodies- oceans, seas, lakes, and rivers. (Trace the course the rivers with the blue pen and label it.) The red pen should be used to locate all cities on the map The brown pen should be used to locate all mountains, plateaus or plains. (Draw a circle around mountain ranges, plateaus, etc.) The black pen should be used to label all states or other territorial divisions. Late Maps Late maps will be penalized 10% (Late is defined as not being turned in on the date due.) Under no circumstances should these map exercises be complete in class. Reference Sources Several reference sources should be consulted to complete these exercises. The maps at the beginning of each regional chapter can be used to find many of the geographical terms. Atlases are also available in the library. A particularly useful source is Microsoft’s Encarta World Atlas, which is on line through the SMC computer center. Using the FIND feature of the program will locate any geographical term you need. (Just accurately type the term in the box under FIND, and the program will instantly locate the item for you. It is important that you have basic geographical place name knowledge as part of this course. The examinations for the course will test your place name capability. (For example, you should know that Hong Kong is located in the southern part of China, and Beijing is located in the North China plain, far away from Hong Kong.) 2 I.
