IDC HERZLIYA STUDENTS CONDUCT FIRST-EVER SEMINAR
FOR INTERNATIONAL JOURNALISTS
MEDIA IN CONFLICT SEMINAR (MICS) WILL BE HELD AUGUST 23-27 ON THE CAMPUS
Students of the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya will hold the first-ever seminar that will
explore international media coverage of conflicts with emphasis on the Israeli situation. MICS
(Media in Conflicts Seminar) will be held August 23 through Thursday August 27 on the IDC
Herzliya campus in Israel. Open to 30 participating journalists and students, it will enable
European media to experience Israel not from a distance, but up- close, with the goal
of improving public opinion.
MICS is an initiative of IDC students who are members of the StandWithUs Israel Fellowship, a
year-long program from the international, non-profit Israel education organization, that trains
students to become ambassadors for Israel. www.standwithus.co.il
Approved by the Ministry of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora, MICS includes journalists, editors,
correspondents, and foreign correspondents from all over Europe including countries with an
anti-Israel stance. Media, journalists and broadcast reporters
from Great Britain, Poland,
Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Albania, Israel, and others are participating in the
seminar.
Delegates will attend sessions, workshops and lectures on topics topics such as, “how to cover
a terrorist attack”; “psychological repercussions of conflict coverage;” “the use of military
censorship;” and “conflict coverage by foreign correspondents.” The Israeli-Arab conflict will be
analyzed as a case study. They will meet experts including Moty Crystal, Ron Ben Yishai, Dr
Jonathan Fine and their European counterparts. Furthermore, there will be excursions and
tours of television studios and news desks of leading Israeli networks.
MICS project initiator Taly Gerber, a first year student at the IDC's Lauder School of
Government, Diplomacy and Strategy and StandWithUs Israel Fellow noted that, "each student
represents an exhilarating life story and to the journalistic profession. Our aspiration is that
together, we can create a wide social and professional network with representatives all over
Europe. This network will aspire to more balanced media coverage of Israel as a result of their
experiences here."
Leading companies have generously donated their resources and helped enable the seminar to
come into fruition; amongst them are: the IDB Group, the YEC Entrepreneurship Club, the
National Student Union, the IDC Student Union, Fattal Hotel Chain – who will host participants
in the new business hotel "Leonardo Botique" in Ramat HaChayal
MICS will take place Sunday – Thursday (23-27 August) at the IDC Herzliya campus.
