I am speaking at the Greater New Bedford chapter in October on the subject of Jefferson Davis. Davis was a man of great character who was the “Other American President” and followed a cause which history has proven tragic and unfortunate. He and many other great men on either side contributed blood and courage to help America find its way to a new nation which was greater than the sum of its parts. My thanks and appreciate to the hard working folks who bring you one great Jubilee year after year. Joe Dipoli DUES ARE DUE! Please submit! Thus the radical opposition party formed, supported by radical abolitionists, nominated Fremont and Senator Colchrane as the president and VP candidates. In fact, the Republicans went so far as to change the name of the party for the election, and campaigned as the National Union Party. Lincoln and the Republicans removed VP Hamlin from the ticket, and nominated Tennessee Democrat Andrew Johnson as VP, largely for political reasons. Lincoln supporters actively campaigned by telling voters it was best “not to change Dale Julius, president 508 378-2706 Dalejulius91@gmail.com ANNOUCEMENTS Olde Colony Civil War Round Table can now be found on the Web! horses in midstream” not to elect a new president in the midst of a (Civil) war. But the Democrats were equally divided. The nominee was General McClellan. His support for the party platform, which called for peace with the Confederacy, was questionable at best. Setbacks on the battlefield occurred; particularly humiliating was Early raid on Washington. Lincoln famously had Cabinet members endorse a memorandum noting his defeat in the coming election. At this dark moment, the tide turned on the battlefield. Sherman captured Atlanta, Farragut damned torpedoes in Mobile Bay, and Sheridan wreaked havoc in the Shenandoah Valley. Fremont withdrew his candidacy, in order that he not pull votes away from Lincoln reelection. With his re election in hand, Lincoln endorsed the 13 th amendment, and the institution of slavery was forever banned in the United States Most compelling of presentation by Barbara Berensen was not a review of the events, but the interpretation of the legal aspects of the election. Most telling was a question from new member Louis Ostrovsky, after which Ms. Berensen described the limitations and legalities of the 13th amendment. Minibit by Joe Dipoli General Darius Couch Joe described the history of this general who fought prominently at the battle of Chancellorsville. He is buried at the Mayflower Cemetery in Taunton. Our Previous meeting Barbara Berensen The Election of 1864 The importance of the election was the outcome of the 13th amendment. The issues deciding the election were the reelection of Lincoln, abolishment of slavery, and the defeat of the Confederacy. There was opposition to Lincoln’s reforms, who would allow Confederate states to resume their status in the United States if supported by only 10 per 6 April 21, 2016 Dale Julius Olde Colony Civil War Round Table 2015-2016 Such appreciation to the effort of Jack Kavanagh Program chair! “A Civil War Round Table event” May 19, 2015 “Alexander Stephens” Most meetings begin at 7 pm with announcements from the President, followed by a presentation: The Civil War in 4, a video program from the Civil War Preservation Trust, organized by Dana Zaiser: Brian Sims: “Russia in the Civil War” October 17, 2015 Jubilee Frank O’Rielly “The Fredericksburg Campaign” November 19, 2015 Susan Kuecker minibit 15th Iowa at Shiloh Mark Dunkelman, renowned author “Patrick Henry Jones: Civil War general and gilded age politician” December 17, 2015 Brian Murphy, OCCWRT “A Civil War Christmas” A yearly OCCWRT event, not to be missed!
