COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course covers the management and husbandry of animals housed in a hospital or shelter situation. Proper kennel cleaning and disinfection, record keeping, monitoring of health parameters, nutrition, bathing, administration of common medications, and diagnostic sampling.
COURSE COMPETENCIES:
During this course, the student will be expected to:
1. Demonstration knowledge of basic animal care.
2. Explain principles of orphan animal care.
3. Demonstrate understanding of permanent identification methods.
4. Prepare feed and prescription diets.
5. Implement patient and personnel safety measures.
6. Understand the importance and fundamentals of record-keeping, care, and observation of hospitalized patients.
7. Place in, and remove small animals from cages.
7.1 Apply dog safety muzzle.
7.2 Apply Elizabethan collar
7.3 Apply restraint pole.
8. Perform therapeutic bathing, basic grooming, and dipping of small animals.
9. Trim nails (canine, feline, avian).
10. Clean and medicate ears (canine, feline).
11. Express anal glands.
