Black and Latino Men’s Resource Center Committee Meeting
September 27, 2006 - Minutes
Committee Members present: Dean Lester Primus; Bryan Lewis; Josiah Ricardo; Carlos
Castillo; Art Kureczka
Guests present: Glenn E. Geathers, City of Hartford – Neighborhood Project Manager
Jose L. Rodriguez, City of Hartford – Small Business Development Coordinator
Meeting was called to order at 12:35PM
I.
Chair Administrative Matters/Updates
a. Art was assigned as the minute taker.
b. Minutes from August 31, 2006 meeting were accepted.
1. spelling of Bache to Basche in 2b needs to be changed.
c. Black and Latino Male Resource Center Coordinator Job Description (I-C)
1. Josiah suggested that the qualifications include experience with diverse
groups.
2. Carlos also suggested that the candidate be bi-lingual.
3. Both Carlos and Josiah suggested that there be co-coordinators to
represent both the Black and Latino population.
d. Educational Assistant (Latino Male)
1. Per Dean Primus’ e-mail dated September 28, 2006, funds are available
for the position and he is looking for any interested candidates.

f. Letter to Black and Latino Males
1. Committee agreed that the letter needed to be toned down.
2. Since professors can not use the mid-term grade function in the faculty
webpage a grade point average can not be determined by mid-semester.
3. The committee will look into the Early Alert Warning System that is
facilitated by Jackie Phillips and the Welcome Center.
1. Art suggested that the “Academic Warning” letter given to
students be revised, he will follow up with Jackie.
2. Dean Primus will follow up with the faculty involvement in the
Early Alert Warning System (believed at this time to be used by
approximately 25% - 30% of the faculty).
4. Letter hoping to be sent out by next week

1. Forth-coming regarding the mission of the resource center and their
anticipated cooperation in identifying prospective students.

1. Marie-Rose Farrell in the media center is working on specifications.
2. Josiah suggested that we get the College’s Communication Committee
involved.

Annual Black and Latino Male Conference
a. Committee Selection - refer to August 31, 2006 minutes section 3c.

c. Speaker selection and notification - refer to August 31, 2006 minutes section 3c.

Geathers and Rodriguez, City of Hartford
a. Very willing to collaborate with the committee in both motivating and inspiring
the Black and Latino students. Programs such as job shadowing and mentoring
are available. They also suggested working with the Urban League. Though they
are very busy, according to Rodriguez, “We always have a minute”.
