Well Known Fremont Carpenter Was Born and Always Resided in Fremont. Many Relatives and
Friends Survive
William E. Fought, 68, one of Fremont's best known residents, died suddenly Monday afternoon at
3:30 at his home 808 Ewing street, following an attack of heart trouble. Reaching home a few minutes
before he died Mr. Fought complained of a pain in his side. Jokingly he asked his niece, Mrs. Elle
McKelvey, who was with Mrs. Fought at the time what he should do for the pain. Mrs. McKelvey told
him to take some soda and after he had done this he again jokingly asked, "What shall I do now."
When told to lie down and get some rest he said, "Well I guess I will." With that he laid down upon a
sofa, gasped and died almost instantly.
His death came as a great shock not only to the members of his family but to his wide circle of friends
with whom "Billy" Fought was extremely popular. He had been bothered with slight attacks of heart
trouble for some time, but nothing serious was anticipated. On Monday he worked at his trade as
carpenter until 2:30 in the afternoon. He then went to the Gordon Lumber company office where he
paid a small bill for lumber and returned to his home. The slight pain he was suffering at the time, he
did not consider serious and was joking with his wife and niece until his sudden death transpired.
Mr. Fought was a life long resident of Sandusky county. He was born in Washington township, on
Feb. 23, 1852 and was the son of Samuel and Susana Fought. He was educated in the district
schools of the township and remained on the farm until after he had reached manhood. While
engaged in farming part of the time he also learned and followed the carpenter's trade which was his
vocation in after life.
After locating in Fremont forty years ago he followed his trade until his death.
Mr. Fought was twice married. His first married occurred in 1877 when he was united in marriage to
Miss Sarah Richards. To this union was born one son Arthur Fought of Fremont. In 1881 shortly after
his arrival in Fremont he was again married, this time to Miss Margaret Basom, the widow, who
survives.
Mr. Fought was a member of the Methodist church and was a member of the Men's Bible Class. He
was also a member of the National Union fraternal society.

Mich.; Dr. Harry B., of Cleveland; and C. Earl Fought, of Oak Harbor; five brothers, Absalom, Four

Toledo; two sisters, Mrs. F.O. Arnett, of Fremont; and Mrs. Nancy Gillier, of Clarks, Nebraska; three
grand children; a number of other relatives and a wide circle of friends to whom his passing brings
deep and sincere regret.
During his long residence in Fremont, Mr. Fought always commanded the highest respect and
esteem of every one. He was an industrious and honest citizen, kind husband and father, friend and
neighbor and few men in the city had a wider circle of friends and acquaintances.
The funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 from the Methodist church. Rev. G.F.
Barber will officiate and the remains will be taken to the Four Mile House cemetery for interment.
