BJÖRNBERG CEPI Chairman CEO, Myllykoski Corporation Mr. Björnberg was born in 1941 at Ruovesi, Finland, and graduated from the Helsinki University in 1964 as Master of Political Science. He joined Myllykoski Oy in 1964 where he became Vice President, Sales and then President in 1978. From 1987 - 1992 Mr. Björnberg was Chairman of the Central Association of the Finnish Forest Industries. At present he is member of the Board and its Executive Committee. He also serves on the Board of the Confederation of Finnish Industry and Employers. In 1996, Carl Björnberg was elected Chairman of Myllykoski Paper Oy. In the same year he was elected member of the board of the Metsäliitto Group. He is also Chairman of the Board for Finnish Chemicals Oy since 1997 and Oy Karl Fazer Ab since 1999. External positions include a seat in the Owners' Committee of Madison Paper Industries, Maine, and Madison Paper Company, Alsip. He is also Board member of MD Lang Papier GmbH, Germany, which consists of paper mills in Germany and Switzerland. He is also CEPI (Confederation of European Paper Industries) Chairman since January 2004. Prof. Maria da Graça Carvalho Policy analyst, Bureau of European Policy Advisers She is a policy analyst in the areas of Science, Higher Education, Innovation, Information Society, Energy, Transport, Environment, Space and Security Research Policy and Sustainable Development in the Bureau of European Policy Advisers, a Department of the European Commission reporting directly to the President. She is a Full Professor at the Mechanical Engineering Department of IST-Instituto Superior Técnico (Technical University of Lisbon) since June 1992. In 1983 she obtained her Ph.D. at the Imperial College in London. She has participated in and coordinated a large number of international R & D Projects. She has over 500 publications in Scientific Journals, Books and International Conferences Proceedings to her credit. Her main research field is Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development. She was Minister of Science and Higher Education of the XV Constitutional Government of Portugal and Minister of Science, Innovation and Higher Education of the XVI Constitutional Government, Director-General of GRICES-Office for International Relations in Science and Higher Education and Deputy President of the Portuguese Association of Engineers. She was a member of the Board of Directors President of the Scientific Board of Instituto Superior Técnico (Technical University of Lisbon). She is a member of 22 national and international scientific associations and fellow of AIAAAmerican Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and of AAAS-American Association for the Advancement of Science. She was decorated by the President of Portugal with the designation “Great Official of the Order of Public Instruction” within the scope of International Women Day Programme (8 March 2002) and by the Chancellery of the International Order of Merit of the Discoverer of Brazil with the high honour of the Great Cross (26 April 2005). Bernard de Galembert Forest Director, CEPI Born in 1966, Bernard de Galembert holds a Degree in Economics, with a specialisation in European Affairs. From 1991 to 1994, he worked as Chief Economic Adviser to the Confederation of European Sugar Manufacturers (CEFS). He wrote two books on subsidies and programmes in favour of companies in the EU. From 1994 to 1996, he joined the European Farmers’ Union (COPA-COGECA) where he took in charge the daily management in support to the Secretary General. In addition, he was in charge of setting up and managing the Working Group on Forestry. In 1996, he joined the French Landowners’ Organisation (FNPA) as Director General of a monthly Thematic Magazine “La Propriété Agricole” and as President’s Adviser. He was later appointed Chief Policy Adviser of the European Landowners’ Organisation (ELO) in 1997. He joined CEPI as Forest Director in 2002. His competencies cover International (United Nations Forum on Forests, etc.) and European (Ministerial Conference on Protection of Forests in Europe, European Forestry Strategy, etc.) policies related to forestry, wood supply for the European Paper Industry, certification of sustainable forest management and Mutual Recognition of certification schemes, illegal logging, renewable energy sources and carbon sequestration in forests, etc. David Halford Deputy Production Director and Head of Procurement, BBC David Halford is Deputy Production Director and Head of Procurement in the magazines division of BBC Worldwide. Based in London, he is responsible for the print procurement of 70 magazines including market leaders such as Top Gear and Gardeners’ World. David is a member of the Periodical Publishers Association environment committee and sits on the WWF UK Forest and Trade Network advisory board. He has been at the forefront of the BBC’s drive to see all its magazines printed on FSC certified paper. He lives in Greenwich, a few hundred metres from the Prime Meridian, with his wife and three children, and in his spare time is helping to pilot small-scale village tree planting schemes in northern Tanzania. Esa Hyvärinen Environment Director, CEPI Esa Hyvärinen holds a Masters of Science Degree in Forestry as well as a Masters of Science Degree in Economics from the University of Helsinki in Finland. Before joining CEPI in April 2000, he worked for the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Finland and was responsible for competitiveness policies for forest-based and related industries. As Recycling Director at CEPI, he is responsible for issues related to paper recovery and recycling, waste management and packaging. Esa Hyvärinen was appointed Environment Director at CEPI in June 2004 and his responsibilities cover environmental issues related to the pulp and paper production process, such as IPPC, energy and climate change, EMS, incineration and eco-label. Bernard Lombard Trade and Competitiveness Director, CEPI Bernard Lombard holds a Master in Econometrics and Economics from the University of Nanterre and a degree in Business Analysis from the University of Paris-Dauphine. He worked in Paris for one year as a consultant and carried out several studies on industrial sectors. From 1996 until June 2000 he worked for COPACEL, the “Confédération de l’Industrie Française des Papiers, Cartons et Celluloses” in France where he was responsible for the economics and competitiveness department. He joined CEPI in 2000 as Recycling & Economics Manager, which involves work on issues related to paper recovery and recycling, economics and competitiveness. In mid 2004 he was appointed Trade and Competitiveness Director and now handles issues related to competitiveness including trade and transportation. Teresa Presas Managing Director, CEPI Teresa Presas was born in 1952 in Portugal and has a degree in psychology from the Instituto de Psicologia Aplicada, Lisbon. From 1972 to 1974 she worked for the Consumer Research Department of Lintas International. She has worked as a journalist for the Semanario Expresso in Lisbon and has also worked on external & international relations at the Portuguese Film Institute. Ms. Presas entered into the paper industry in 1982 as Director of Communication and Marketing Services for Tetra Pak Portugal. She later went on to become Director of Communication and Environment for Tetra Pak Europe and then, Vice President of European Affairs for Tetra Pak Europe and Africa and Director of Corporate Environmental Affairs for Tetra Pak International. Between 1991 and 2003 she was member of the Board and Executive Committee of various organisations including, ACE (the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment), ASSURE (Association for the Sustainable Use and Recovery of Resources in Europe) and EUROPEN (European Organisation for Packaging and the Environment). Teresa Presas became Managing Director of CEPI in September 2003. Jori Ringman Recycling Director, CEPI Jori Ringman has a background in Economics (Helsinki University) and Business Management (Helsinki School of Economics) and a wide experience in communications, public administration and politics. As Recycling Director in CEPI, Mr Ringman is responsible for issues relating to paper recovery and recycling, waste policy as well as packaging. Prior to his appointment in CEPI February 2005, he was civil servant in the European Commission. He has also worked i.e. in the European Parliament Environment Committee as political advisor (1999 – 2004), journalist and editor in Finland, and secretary general of a parliamentary group in the Finnish National Parliament in Helsinki. Paul Rowsome Environment Manager, Carrefour Environmental Manager at Carrefour (based in Paris) since 2002, contributing to the group's sustainability program. Work includes overseeing group sustainability reporting, SRI (socially responsible investment) information management and promoting environmental best practice in the groups different activities: stores, supply chain, own-brand products. Previously worked for five years with Philips Electronics as Environmental Manager at the Consumer Communications business in France. Work included product packaging ecodesign and technical product benchmarking for mobile telephones. Paul Rowsome graduated from Leeds University in England with a BSc Honours Degree in Geography in 1997. Jan Svärd CEO Eka Chemicals As many others at Eka Chemicals, Jan Svärd began his career with a M.Sc. degree from Chalmers University of Technology. He was born in 1959 and grew up in Lerum, a suburb to Gothenburg. After secondary school he passed Chalmers studying mechanical engineering and industrial economics. He took his degree in 1984 and then began work directly for Berol Kemi, Stenungsund. In 1991 he became manager of the Paint and Building Additive Division at Berol Nobel and in 1995 was appointed president of the Akzo Nobel Surface Chemistry Business Unit, where Berol Nobel was included after the merger between Nobel Industries and Akzo. In April 2000, Jan was appointed president of Eka Chemicals, the Pulp & Paper Business Unit of Akzo Nobel. Jan is also Chairman of SKGS, a coordinating body for the Swedish Forest, Chemical, Mining and Steel Industries. Jan is married to Birgitta and has two boys aged 16 and 18. The family lives in Lerum and spend their summers in Gottskär on the Swedish west coast.
