Health Leadership Fellows Program
A collaborative leadership experience toward improved health care
The Health Foundation for Western and Central New York is committed to creating
lasting change in health and health care across western and central New York, with a
special focus on vulnerable older adults, young children impacted by poverty and the
systems serving them.
One strategy to achieve that goal is leadership development that focuses on the
collaborative implementation of the “Twenty First Century Core Competencies for
Health and Human Services.” These competencies reflect person-centered care,
continuous quality improvement and national best practices.
Launched in 2005, the Health Leadership Fellows program seeks to enhance and
support a cadre of diverse, highly skilled, collaborative leaders from health care and
safety-net organizations in western and central New York.
Program Overview
 The Health Leadership Fellows Program is an 18-month program consisting of
four residential sessions that are two to three days each.
o Topic areas include: personal leadership, leading change,
communicating as leader and results-based leadership and
collaboration.
 Ongoing learning occurs between sessions in small teams. Each team develops
a collaborative project. Team work also includes personal leadership plans, case
material and application of core competencies
 Executive coaching is provided for each leadership fellow.
 Research and academic support is provided for each team.
 Group learning is supported by a designated website
 Nationally recognized experts serve as faculty
 All expenses are underwritten by the Health Foundation for Western and Central
New York
 Graduates become members of the Fellows Action Network
Who is Eligible to Apply: Professionals in decision-making positions of influence in
health-related or safety-net organizations serving vulnerable older adults or children
impacted by poverty from the 16 counties served by the Health Foundation.
Independent consultants do not meet the eligibility criteria for the program.
