FAMILY NATURE WALKS

Sundays; September 19th/October 17th/November 14th 2:00-3:30 PM

Follow the autumn season along the trails of Werner’s Woods. Geared for all ages over easy walking terrain. Pre-registration is not required. Cost is $2.00 for members, $4.00 nonmembers (children age 14 and under are half-price). Walks as follows: September

19th - late butterflies & other insects; October 17th - fall foliage; November 14th - getting ready for winter.

MORNING BIRD WALKS

Saturdays; September 11th, 18th; October 2nd, 9th 7:30 - 9:00 AM

The fall migration season can provide an unusual array of species, some on their way to the tropics, others arriving to spend the winter in southern New England. Geared for beginners as well as more experienced birders (not geared for younger children).

Binoculars, a field guide, and footwear suitable for wet ground conditions are recommended. Cost $2.00 members, $3.00 nonmembers. Pre-registration is not required.

BIRD SEED SALE SCHEDULED NOVEMBER 13TH

In conjunction with the Canton Lions Club, the Nature Center will again offer a wide selection of high quality seed and bird feeding accessories. This year’s sale has been delayed to avoid the height of bear season. We offer high quality, below gift shop prices, but seed must be ordered in advance to receive this reduced rate. To receive a bird seed order form, please call the Nature Center at 693-0263

EVENING NATURE WALKS

Fridays; September 17th and October 1st 7:30 - 8:45 PM

For those who enjoyed our summer evening walk series, here are two more! Bring a flashlight (it will be dark outdoors), and dress for cooler temperatures. We’ll be on the lookout for owls, katydids, flying squirrels and other nocturnal creatures. Cost is $2.00 for members, $4.00 for nonmembers (half price for children under age 14).

AMAZING DISCOVERIES

September 26th 2:00 - 3:00 PM Free with Building Admission

On its surface Connecticut may seem tame, but look more closely and you’ll see a state where amazing discoveries about rocks, dinosaurs and wildlife have been made for centuries. Presented by author Brendan Hanrahan, “Great Day Trips to Discover the

Geology, Paleontology and Ecology of Connecticut” is a talk that traces two centuries of astonishing discoveries and tells the stories of the scientists who made them. The presentation includes photos not previously available to the public. Books will be available for purchase following the program.

HOBGOBLIN FAIR

SATURDAY OCTOBER 30th 10:00 AM - Noon

OR 1:00 - 3:00 PM

What “critters” will appear on our trails this Halloween? Join us for our annual

Hobgoblin Fair featuring the “track-and-treat” walk, children’s crafts and a delicious lunch of homemade soup, bread and apple cider. Suitable for children ages 3 - 8. Cost per members $5.00, nonmember $6.00 per child. Fee includes track-and-treat walk plus two activity tickets for crafts. (Additional activity tickets are on sale the day of the Fair). Pre-registration with payment is required. You may register in person or by mail. Please specify AM or PM session. Children are encouraged to wear costumes IF they are suitable for walking in the woods and participating in the craft activities. Parents should plan to stay with their children.

Please note that there are no refunds and participants should attend the session for which they register.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES

The Nature Center offers birthday parties for children on selected weekday afternoons and on Saturdays. The cost for a party is $75.00 for members/$90.00 for nonmembers. Pre-registration, with a $30.00 non-refundable deposit, is required.

Register early! Balance is payable on the day of party.

SCOUT PROGRAMS

Leaders of Daisy, Brownie, and Junior Girl Scout Troops, as well as Cub Scout

Troops, will find that numerous badge requirements may be fulfilled by a visit to

Roaring Brook Nature Center.

FALL DISCOVERY DAYS PROGRAMS

Discovery Days, the Nature Center’s enrichment series for young children, begin the fall season with an exciting array of programs for pre-schoolers and students in grades K-3.

The cost of each four week session is $30 for members/$40 for nonmembers (except for

Nature For Little Ones as noted below). A $10 discount is extended to families with a second child attending during the same monthly period. Registration is now open and you may register by mail or in person during regular Center hours. Please note that classes will be held on Veteran’s Day, November 11th. A special one hour walk will be held for older siblings of students registered for the Exploring Together program for preschoolers and a parent. There is no charge for the walk; however, registration is required.

Discovery Days programs will continue throughout the school year. The following programs have been scheduled during the fall season

NATURE FOR LITTLE ONES

A series for two year olds and a parent, these two-session, Friday morning programs provide the young child with an introduction to the world of nature. Meets 9:30 - 10:30

AM. Cost: $15.00 members, $20.00 nonmembers. Child must be two years old! Choose from among the following sessions:

Session I: September 24, October 1

Session II: October 8, 15

Session III: October 22, 29

Session IV: November 5, 12

EXPLORING TOGETHER

For pre-schoolers, age 3 and up, accompanied by a parent. This series introduces the young child to seasonal changes in the world of nature and offers parent and child the opportunity to learn together. A younger sibling under age 3 may attend for a $10 discount. No charge for siblings under age 2.

This is an outdoor program, please dress accordingly.

PROGRAMS FOR 4 & 5 YEAR OLDS

Programs for kindergarten students and children in kindergarten readiness programs are held on Thursdays. Morning programs meet 10:00-11:00 AM; afternoon sessions from

1:30-2:30 PM. These programs are for students without parental participation.

Insect Tricks and Walking Sticks

How do monarch butterflies find their way to Mexico? Why do crickets sing? If they’re really beetles, why are they called “lady bugs?” Sticks that walk??? Meets September

23, 30; October 7,14.

Crazy About Nuts!

Acorns are eaten by squirrels, porcupines, turkeys, wood ducks and more. Find out why the “mast” crop (acorns, hickory nuts, beech nuts and chestnuts) is so important for wildlife.

Meets October 21,28; November 4,11.

Getting Ready for Winter

Most animals do not hibernate during the colder months. Find out how they get ready for a Connecticut winter. Meets November 18; December 2,9,16.

After-school enrichment for students in grades 1,2,3; meets Thursdays 3:45 - 5:00 PM.

Secrets of a Fall Meadow

One hundred years ago meadows dominated Connecticut, but today, the meadow is a vanishing landscape. Our meadow is home to some of the coolest creatures around. Can you find them? Meets September 23,30; October 7,14.

Autumn Leaves

Yes, the foliage is changing, but that’s not all that’s going on in our woodlands. The days are getting cooler and shorter as autumn leaves.

Meets October 21, 28; November 4,11.

Lions and eagles and bears, Oh My!

Connecticut’s wildlife has taken some interesting turns over the past two hundred years. Do mountain lions still roam our hills? Are there eagles in the Valley? What happened to my birdfeeder?

Meets November 18; December 2,9,16.

FALL STORY HOURS Mondays

October 4, 18; November 8 , 22; December 6 1:00-2:00 PM

Reading time for pre-schoolers returns this fall with a new series of story hours. Geared for children age 2-5. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required; however, there is no charge for this program.
