CHEMICAL REQUIREMENTS
*INITIAL START – UP
(Always have pump running when adding Chemicals).
STEP 1: TEST your water with the ‘test strips’. Water must be still when testing. To use Test strips, - dip n read when
jets are off, colour is most accurate within 10 – 15 seconds.
NOTE: Colour will go darker when left – this is not your true and accurate reading. If unsure check the manufacturer’s instructions on the bottle.
STEP 2: ADJUST alkalinity and pH with test strips. (Red & green spectrum). Adjust Total Alkalinity to 140 – 180
and pH to 7.6. Use ‘Total alkalinity increaser’, which is just bi-carb, to do this. On start up, the usual requirement is
3 heaped table spoons per 1000 litres for Sydney water. 1 heaped tbl sp = 30g. Run jets for 2 min then check with strips
again. Add more T/A Increaser if required.
NOTE: PH / Alkalinity balance is critical for sanitiser efficiency and protection of pumps and equipment.
STEP 3: PLACE ‘Nature 2’ into the filter or filter basket. (For LA Spas – put in right hand bag - circ pump filter – if
fitted with circ pump). Nature 2 is a natural mineral based bactericide to inhibit bacterial growth. The release of the
minerals is activated by the Chlorine at start up (step 4). The remaining minerals release slowly over the next 4 months.
NOTE: If you empty all the water before this time, most of the minerals will be lost and you will need to replace the Nature 2.
STEP 4: ADD chlorine granules ‘Lithium Hypochlorite’ (LH) at the rate of approx 2 heaped tablespoons per 1000
litres. This will activate the Nature 2 as well as kill any bacteria in the water. Lithium hypochlorite is a form of chlorine
and the most effective bactericide for spas. It is also the best for spa use. Ordinary chlorines such as liquid chlorine can
corrode equipment. Bromine can damage jet housings and the heater elements if levels get too high. Keep them away!
NOTE: Use LH Chlorine at start up and after spa use. If there is a heavy bather load put a small amount of LH chlorine in before use. Use your test
strips to measure a safe Chlorine level of between 1 -3 ppm - Approx 15g per 1000 litres. Chlorine usually burns out after 6 – 8 hours. You will find
no chlorine reading after this time. This is okay, Nature 2 & spa magic will help keep the water clean when not in use. Ozone will also assist in
minimising chemicals. Leave the cover off for 15 minutes to allow chlorine gasses to release.
STEP 5: WAIT for water temp. to reach 30 degrees and add ‘Spa Magic’ (160ml per 500 litres). Spa Magic is a
natural living enzyme; it helps break down body fats in the water, pipe work and filters. It also locks in the pH, protects
your equipment, pulls waste and undissolved solids out of the water, reduces foaming and softens the water.
Note: Spa Magic will take a few hours to fully mix through and become part of the water, it has a gluggy appearance at first. This is normal. If a
white line around edge forms, wipe off with a chux rag and bi carb; the spa magic has pulled impurities and chemical waste out of the water.
*BEFORE USE
Do not use every time as spa shock can last 2 days in the water. Do not over dose as spa shock will lower PH.
Add ‘Spa Shock’ 15 minutes before you have a spa at a rate of 1 level table spoon (15g) per 1000 litres. Turn the spa on
high and open up the air venture valves to oxygenate the water. Spa shock will help remove chloramines (a toxic by
product of chlorine) and bather waste. Be sure to take off the cover to allow the contaminants to oxidise into the
atmosphere. If you don’t; they will hit the cover and drop back into the spa. Adding spa shock is much like opening the
windows when you get home to let fresh air into the house. By using spa shock correctly; your spa water will feel fresh
and alive. This will also act like ‘caffeine’ to the Nature 2 and give you protection while in the spa. Spa shock can last up
to 2 days in the water.
ALTERNATIVE METHOD – Use larger dose once per week as above - 30gr per 1000 litres. Wait 2 hours before use.
NOTE: It is usually the chloramines that cause skin irritations for some and not the chlorine.
*AFTER USE - (Always leave the cover off for 15 minutes when using chlorine to allow gasses to escape).
Add LH Chlorine after use. LH Chlorine is a most powerful sanitiser and will kill any bacteria left in the water after use.
Use 2 heaped table spoons per 1000 (60g) litres. Take the cover off and run the pumps. Always check the spa the day
after use to ensure the water is clear. Add an extra dose of chlorine if necessary. If the spa does not clear on second dose,
clean your filters and give a top up of 10% clean water. It may be time to change the water if your spa does not respond to
the chlorine - this can also indicate high PH. No need to add excess chemicals.
CHLORINE: When you first use the spa – you will detoxify. A small amount of LH Chlorine prior to use may be
needed before you spa at a rate of 1 heaped teaspoon per 1000 litres. This will be in the safe range of 1-3 ppm. You may
also need to add Chlorine prior to use at the same rate if there is a heavy bather load (more than 2 people) – this will give
extra protection to keep bacteria levels under control during spa use.
*NORMAL USAGE
WEEKLY
STEP 1: REMOVE approx 10% of water volume and refill to required level. (This is important if the spa is heavily
used)
NOTE: This is to keep total dissolved solids (TDS) down to a minimum so that your water will stay fresh for longer.
STEP 2: CHECK alkalinity and pH with test strips. (Red & green spectrum). Adjust Total Alkalinity between 140 – 180
and pH to 7.6. If low add ‘Total alkalinity increaser’. If high – add fresh water.
NOTE: Keep ph at 7.6 to 7.8 or your chlorine will not kill bacteria as efficiently. It is also critical for protection of your spa and equipment.
STEP 3: ADD spa shock if the spa is not in use at a rate of approx 1 level table spoon (15g) per 1000 litres once per
week. Do not over dose spa shock. Take off the cover to allow chloramines and bather waste to oxidise out of the spa. If
water is cloudy add chlorine (LH) instead of spa shock. If you have the LA UWM system or ozone, there is no need to
add chemicals when not in use unless water is starting to go cloudy.
STEP 4: ADD SPA MAGIC. 30 – 50 ml per 1000 litres on a weekly basis if you remove 10 buckets of water.
If no fresh water is added, there is no need to add extra spa magic.
WATER CHANGE
*Important - CHANGE THE WATER EVERY 4 MONTHS - OR SOONER IF REQUIRED DUE TO HEAVY
USEAGE. REPLACE THE NATURE 2 WHEN THE SPA IS DRAINED.
CLEAN FILTERS REGULARLY Fortnightly should be sufficient unless heavy bather load. To clean, use a
high pressure nozzle. For LA filters, wash with ¼ cup of bleach on wool cycle in your washing machine.
Note: Clean filters are essential to clean water. If the water is cloudy – the first step is always to clean the filters. Make sure filters are thoroughly
rinsed and no foreign cleaning solutions enter the spa. For extra degreasing of filters, filters can be soaked in a degreasing solution.
KEEP SAND AND GRIT OUT OF THE SPA
Sand and grit can damage jets and diverters and cause them to get stuck or not turn. As soon as jets or diverter valves feel
gritty or won’t turn, remove and clean. Sand with light wet and dry sand paper and rub in silicone lubricant. If you are
unsure how to do this feel free to contact Splashes for further instruction.
Note: There is no warranty for jets or diverters stuck due to sand or grit.
TROUBLE SHOOTER
Cloudy or discoloured water – Usually due to bacteria or bather waste in the spa. Make sure the filters are clean. Check
pH and alkalinity. If low, add ‘Alkalinity increaser’ as per instructions, if high add 1/3 fresh water. Test again after
running the spa for 2 minutes. When pH level is correct, add Chlorine at a rate of (2 table sp per 1000 litres). It may be
necessary to take out 1/3 of the water and top up with fresh water if the water is very grey.
Chemical odour - Add Spa shock (1 table sp per 1000 litres), this will activate the Nature 2 and oxidise the impurities.
Take the cover off and run for ½ hour.
Putrid or ‘OFF’ water - Time to change the water. It is easier and cheaper to add fresh water. Sometimes the water has
maximised itself and is so full of dissolved solids that it no longer responds to chemical treatment.
Foamy water – This can be associated with detergents or soaps in the water and excessive bather waste. Never use
household cleaners in the spa. Incorrect pH can also contribute. Make sure you are using ‘Spa Magic’ and ‘Spa Shock’
correctly – they both assist in removing bather waste and undissolved solids from the water. Notice the bubbles subside as
you add the Spa Magic. If foaming is excessive, flick out the foam as it is just undissolved waste and remove 10% - 30 %
of the water and add fresh water.
Note: Do not over use spa magic or spa shock. 30ml Spa magic and 30g Spa shock should be sufficient.
OZONE
Ozone is an aid to keeping your spa clean but it is not enough on its own. The water must always be kept balanced and
LH chlorine must be added after use. Ozone will assist in killing bacteria when the spa is not in use and reduce the need
for chemicals.
*CHEMICAL TREATMENT is based on average use only, 2 people, for ½ hour 3 – 4 times per week. More usage
requires more chemicals. Use your own discretion and follow instructions on containers for further info if unsure.
NOTE: Please use this chemical maintenance system as a guide only as there can be many variances. Splashes Spa World and its staff offer this
