How MARTINA Excited. A little overwhelmed. But I'm ready. Bring on the customers. Julia walks over from the gallery section of the café. JOHN Julia, your exhibit looks great. JULIA Oh, thanks. Most of it's done; I just need to hang a few more pictures. JOHN Oh, Martina, do you know Julia? MARTINA No, hi! You run the gallery, right? I love your work. JULIA Oh, thanks! JOHN Martina's the new owner of the café. JULIA Your place looks fantastic. JOHN She's also working on her master's degree. JULIA What are you studying? MARTINA Business. It's a lot of work but I love it. JOHN Martina has two cafés now. She's gonna take over the city pretty soon. MARTINA Your photos are so impressive. How do you decide what to photograph? JULIA By keeping my eyes open. New York is paradise for a photographer. Elizabeth joins them. ELIZABETH Hi, we haven't met. JOHN Julia, this is Elizabeth. fashion designer. She's a ELIZABETH Well, I'm studying to be one. JOHN Elizabeth also helps me out at the theater. She works on the costumes. Elizabeth beckons Mia to come over. ELIZABETH This is my roommate Mia. Julia, Martina - and this is John. Mia stops cold, stares intently at John. MIA Do I know you? JOHN Uh, I don't think so. MIA I do. But why does your face look so familiar? Oh, my gosh! I don't believe it. You're...you're Scooter!!! John's face drops. The others are confused; is Mia crazy? Mia (CONT'D) "Scooter" was my favorite TV show when I was a kid. MARTINA What is she talking about? Tell her. MIA You're Scooter, right? JOHN (ADMITTING IT) I'm not Scooter, but yes, I did, I did play Scooter on a TV show many, many, many years ago. MIA Can I have your autograph, please? It's for my little brother. JOHN No problem. What's his name? All amazed. Martina hands John a pen. MIA Eddie. What are you doing now? Why are you here? JOHN I run the theater here. CHAZ Hi! I’m Chaz, your "Hemispheres" host. OK What does Martina study? (pause) Did you say business? You’re correct! When does she go to school? (pause) Yes, at night. Next, who is Elizabeth? (pause) Elizabeth is a costume designer for the Arts Center theater, and she’s a fashion design student. OK, this last one is a little tricky. What did John do in the past and what does he do now? (pause) In the past, he was Scooter on TV and now, he runs the theater at the Arts Center, and he writes plays. That's all for now. HEMISPHERES 3 LEVEL 10 PART B INT. HEMISPHERES WEST CAFE Mia exits with autograph, calls back: MIA Thanks, Scooter! JOHN Don't mention it. MIA See you later, guys. JOHN Please. ELIZABETH I knew I recognized you. Why didn't you want anyone to know that you were a child star? JOHN Because that was a long time ago. ELIZABETH Mia was a little rude, I guess. But you were very nice. JOHN What am I supposed to do when a fan asks me for my autograph? ELIZABETH Just say, "I'm not Scooter anymore, and I'm really busy." JOHN Then I'd be just as rude. ELIZABETH You're right. (Sees Julia needs help.) Julia, let me help you hang that. Martina brings John fresh coffee as Liz goes to gallery area. JOHN No, thank you. MARTINA I don't get it. I thought all you theater people wanted to be famous. JOHN Being a celebrity is exhausting. MARTINA What do you mean? JOHN Well, when I was at the height of my fame, I was like this teen idol. I didn't have time just to be a kid. And I wanted to be anonymous, but people followed me everywhere. Believe me, fame is overrated ; privacy is underrated. MARTINA I hear what you're saying. (Another customer needs her.) Coming. John walks over to gallery area. JULIA Scooter's nothing to be ashamed of, John. JOHN I just want to be recognized for my serious work now, not some dumb TV show I did when I was thirteen. ELIZABETH I don't think it was dumb. JOHN Oh, please! ELIZABETH Sorry. Can I ask just one favor...can I please have your autograph? JOHN Out! Out! Elizabeth and Julia leave, laughing. CHAZ Let's do a little compare and contrast. When John was 13, he was on a TV show. Now, he writes plays and operates a theater company. He's still in show business, just kind of in a different way. On TV, he was known for being cute. Now, he wants to be known for his talent as a writer and director. Well, I gotta go. There's a "Scooter" rerun on TV, and nothing compares with that!
