JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Lab Manager Job Code: 000209 Salary Plan: Exempt Lab: Batista Direct Supervisor: Facundo Batista Employing Hospital and Department: Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT, and Harvard Minimum degree and field of knowledge: BS/BA required; PhD preferred Years experience required: 7+ years experience Summary: A position is open for a full-time Lab Manager at the Ragon Institute of MGH, Harvard and MIT, who will manage a laboratory including 7 post-docs and 3 – 5 research technicians as well as supervise the management of a large mice colony. The Laboratory Manager will report directly to the PI (Dr. Batista). Biohazard BL2+ training provided, radiation and safety training provided. The candidate will assist in research the cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling B cell activation and fate. Knowledge gained from these studies will help to guide the design of more effective vaccines and treatments against various infectious pathogens including HIV and Influenza. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role as part of an ambitious highly competitive research lab. Under the direction of the principal investigator, the applicant independently carries out daily activities of the laboratory. Purchasing – Organize all placed orders, stock supplies, and maintain a current inventory. Track and follow up on outstanding orders. Assign appropriate grants to each order, and maintain a rough estimate of the amount of money spent on lab supplies. Ensure appropriate distribution of supplies upon receipt. Oversee a large mice colony, organizing breeding etc together with MGH. Facilitate communication between researchers in the lab with other groups regarding shared equipment and spaces. Oversee tissue culture room use and adherence to safety and cleaning procedures Maintain files on all laboratory equipment for instructions and warranty information, submit warranty info. Participate in laboratory meetings and journal clubs. Per the PI of the research lab, work at the bench doing experiments for projects the PI has assigned. Independently performing non-routine, highly specialized experimental procedures and participating in the design and modification of research protocols. There are a wide variety of duties and issues that arise within the laboratory and this position will be the contact person for lab members. Experience with microscopy equipment will be beneficial.
