CRITERIA FOR TENURE
Tenure is awarded for significant achievements in three areas: teaching, scholarly contribution and service. As per the collective bargaining agreement, the weight of the three areas is jointly determined by the individual faculty member and the chair. The underlying assumption is that the department and college will dedicate the appropriate human and financial resources, time and equipment needed for faculty to fulfill the requirements for tenure.
TENURE.
Tenure is awarded for teaching effectiveness, scholarly contributions, creative endeavor, service contributions, and evidence that this performance will be continued and enhanced. Evidence must be demonstrated in all three categories; however, two out of three must be strong.
Elements of Teaching, Scholarly Contributions and Service
In making a tenure recommendation, the following will be necessary requirements for a positive recommendation: having an appropriate terminal degree, demonstrating quality teaching, demonstrating significant scholarly contributions and/or creative endeavor, demonstrating service contributions, and demonstrating continued growth and achievement in the areas of teaching, scholarship and service.
I. Teaching
Demonstration of quality teaching is a necessary, but not sufficient condition for tenure.
The elements to be considered may include, but are not necessarily limited to:
A.
Participation in formal and informal professional development to remain current in knowledge base.
B.
Participation in formal and informal professional development relevant to pedagogy in higher education settings with particular emphasis on such issues as diversity, learning styles, etc.

C. Utilization of formative evaluation practices to revise and refine course offerings.
1. Evidence of the use of at least three student evaluation instruments before tenure review.
2.
Evidence that a third party processed the evaluation instruments to further ensure internal reliability and validity
D.
Facilitation of student development, including contributions on advisory and curriculum committees, accessibility to students as a teacher, and/or advisor, attention to curriculum matters, maintenance of standards and fairness, etc.
E.
Evidence of the use of a variety of teaching techniques to enhance student learning, i.e., technology, cooperative learning and accommodations for students with special needs.
II. Scholarly Contributions
A continuing record of scholarly contribution is a necessary, but not sufficient condition for a positive recommendation for tenure. The components of scholarly contributions and creative endeavors are basic scholarship, applied scholarship and instructional development.
Indications of scholarly contributions and creative endeavors include outputs available for public scrutiny by academic peers or practitioners such as:
A. Production of quality scholarly products.
1. Publications (papers, monographs, textbooks, book reviews, abstracts, etc.
2.
Production, exhibition, or performances of creative works.
3.
Lectures, papers, and/or speeches presented at meetings or other educational institutions.
4.
Attendance at institutes, short courses, and/or seminars related to the faculty member's discipline.
5.
Grants and awards received.
6.
Evidence of national or international recognition.
7.
Current research, scholarly activity, and/or creative endeavor projects in progress.
B.
Evidence of research, scholarly activity, and/or creative endeavor projects in progress, particularly those activities requiring lengthy time periods before reaching their maturity for publication.

III. Service
Service contributions are a necessary, but not sufficient condition for tenure. Decision making bodies shall evaluate the individual's quality and quantity of contributions.
Contributions to the university may include, but are not limited to:
A.
Demonstration of committee assignments and level of involvement.
B.
Development of program and curriculum.
C.
Generation of funds through sponsored research.
D.
Demonstration of administrative service, i.e., chair of committee, chair for national group, chair of task force, director of a particular area on campus such as IRC or Computer Lab.
E.
Demonstration of student advisement.
F.
Demonstration of involvement in student organizations.
G.
Contributions to learned society and professional organizations, i.e., direct participation through offices held, presentations, committee assignments, etc.
H.
Contributions through community service. Activities to be considered include serving on working committees and board of directors of community groups, consulting community groups, governmental organizations, and public service organizations.
IV. Additional Conditions
Conditions of employment for faculty at Pittsburg State University are subject to meet and confer as part of the bargaining process; therefore, referral to this contractual agreement is strongly recommended.

PROMOTION . Promotion is awarded on the basis of contributions in teaching, scholarly contributions, creative endeavor, and service. Within limits, flexibility and individual differences. in terms of weight to be attached to these areas, is possible. As the individual progresses from one rank to the next, it can be expected that performance criteria will remain consistently high. Evidence must be demonstrated in all three areas; however, outstanding performance in one of the three categories must be the focus of the dossier for promotion.
