Millom Heritage Museum and Visitor Centre at Millom Railway Station now sells Rail tickets both from their new Ticket Office and Phone

Booking Service. Commission earned from sales helps keep the

Museum open.

Millom Folk Museum Society was founded in 1973 as a means of preserving the heritage of Millom’s Iron Industry, a major employer of incomers from mining communities throughout

Britain, which sadly closed in 1968 after over 100 years.

Exhibits now range from the prehistoric, with a skull , found down the mines (yet to undergo expensive dating analysis), to

1960’s costume and a little bit of everything in between! There are curiosities such as the Lamp which was used to guide travellers across the dangerous shifting sands of the Duddon Estuary and the Mortuary Cart which was used to bring back those who were tragically caught by the tide.

A fellow local museum RAF Millom Museum finally closed its doors last September and its artefacts sold off by auction on

January 27 th of this year.

Independent museums like ours are constantly trying to find new ways of raising money to upkeep their collections and to guard against this sort of thing happening to them. Diversification seems to be the key word and here at Millom Heritage Museum and Visitor Centre , the new home of Millom Folk Museum Society, we think we are fulfilling that description. As we are situated in the old Station Buildings it seemed fitting, after over 25 years absence, to re-open the Rail Ticket Booking Office , a seed originally planted in our minds by Northern Rail.

Thanks to RDPE, Cumbria Community Foundation, Cumbria

Regeneration Fund, Copeland Borough Council, Cumbria County

Council, Millom Town Council, start up funding enabled our newly formed trading company to employ 3 new part time staff, who alternate with the 2 existing Museum staff who have also been trained to issue Rail tickets.

We provide a personal service from Millom Heritage Museum Rail

Ticket Booking Office both face to face and via the standard rate telephone number 01229 774775 .Anyone throughout the UK, wishing to travel by rail, can be assured of competitive rates and the knowledge that their ticket has helped save our collection for posterity . By way of reward and for a limited period, we will offer half price admission to travellers booking by phone.

We can even check the carbon footprint of your journey.
