Purpose
This unit standard is for people who are currently working, or who intend to
work, in jobs which involve the receipt and storage of bulk grains from local
and imported sources.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: use safe work practices
and procedures while preparing to receive, and receiving; prepare to receive;
and store, bulk grain.

Definitions
Organisational procedures refer to documents that include: worksite rules, codes,
and practices; equipment operating instructions; production specifications;
documented quality management systems; and health and safety requirements.
PPE refers to personal protective equipment and may include but is not limited to:
protective clothing, gloves, safety glasses/headwear/footwear, hearing protection,
safety devices.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Use safe work practices and procedures while preparing to receive, and receiving bulk
grain.
Performance criteria
1.1
PPE is used in accordance with organisational procedures.
1.2
Work environment is clean and free from hazards in accordance with
organisational procedures.
Range
1.3

Element 2
Prepare to receive bulk grain.
Performance criteria
2.1
Equipment used for grain receipt is available, operational, and lubricated within
agreed time-frame.

equipment – conveyors, bucket elevators, blowers, screenings,
sieves, reels, dust extractors.
2.2
Storage vessels with sufficient capacity for scheduled and anticipated grain
volume are available and fit for intended use.
2.3
Variations in specified technical performance of equipment are identified, and
corrective action is implemented to optimise grain receipt.

Store bulk grain.
Performance criteria
3.1
Storage vessel for grain storage is clean, and free from contaminants and leaks.
3.2
Storage vessel for grain storage is available, and has sufficient capacity for
scheduled and anticipated incoming grain.
3.3
Grain is stored in required quantity and storage vessel in accordance with
organisational procedures.
3.4
Variations in stored grain are identified and corrective action implemented within
a timeframe which optimises grain integrity.

3.5
variations include but are not limited to – hot spots, sprouting,
rodent infestation, storage vessel damage.
Equipment for grain storage is available and operational.
Range
equipment includes but is not limited to – drag chains, elevators,
heat sensors.
3.6
Grain storage complies with organisational procedures, and legislation.
3.7
Primary insect control and chemical residues on stored grain are within agreed
tolerances.
3.8
Grain integrity is maintained through correct stock rotation.
3.9
Documentation related to grain storage is accurate and complete in accordance
with organisational procedures.

Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
