Patterns of Earthquakes and Volcanoes
Now let’s consider some other patterns on the Earth.
1. Volcanoes.
Compare the maps that show the location of volcanoes on Mars and on Earth.
Do you see any patterns in where volcanoes on
Mars are located?

Earth are located?
2. Earthquakes.
We don’t have any data about earthquakes on Mars because we have never put any seismometers
there. When astronauts went to the Moon, though, they left seismometers in several places on
the Moon. So we have records of some earthquakes on the Moon. We can also infer that
earthquakes occurred where we can recognize recent geologic faults (cracks where two blocks of
rock slide past each other).
