~ Western Ontario 4-H Beef Invitational~ The Western Ontario 4-H Beef Invitational is a two-day competition July 7th and 8th, 2012, held at David Carson Sales Arena, Listowel, for Ontario 4-H members between the ages of 9 and 21 as of January 1, 2012. Entry Details * Registration Deadline: Friday June 29th, 2012. * Entry Fee - $30 for the first animal and $20 for subsequent entries. * NO Entries will be allowed on show day.* * The show is open to both Breeding Heifers and Market animals. There is no limit on how many animals an exhibitor may enter. Substitute show people must be paid exhibitors. * If you exhibited a breeding heifer in a previous year at the Western Ontario 4-H Beef Invitational show you are invited to bring her back with her 2012 calf at foot. * All exhibitors will be required to sign and return a “Safety Waver” prior to the competition. This waver signifies that David Carson Auctions and the Western Ont. 4-H Beef Show Committee are not responsible for competitors while they participate in the show. It also requires Emergency contact information. Waivers must be sent in with entry forms and filled out completely. * Substitutions will be allowed at the discretion of the committee. A committee member must be contacted prior to arrival. * Competitors must complete all 3 parts of the competition, Education session/quiz, Showmanship and Conformation * The Committee reserves the right to ask an exhibitor to withdraw unruly animals from the show. Registration Calves may begin arriving from 6:00pm–10:00pm on Friday July 6th, 2012 and from 6:00am-11:00am on Saturday. Registration will be from 10:00 am – 11:30am Saturday. Information Session and Quiz There will be an information session on Saturday afternoon at 12:30pm. At the conclusion of this session competitors will be asked to write a Quiz consisting of questions from the session, general beef information, current happenings in the beef industry, and general 4-H knowledge. This quiz will consist of True/False, Multiple Choice and Short Answer Questions. Your Scores from the Quiz will be added to your Showmanship and Conformation Scores for the Overall Grand Champion Award. Showmanship Competition The Showmanship Competition will begin at 2:30pm on Saturday starting with the Pee Wee show and then Senior Showmanship at approximately 3:00pm. This will be a “dry fit” show. Scores will be assigned to each competitor for their showmanship ability. For the championship round exhibitors (top two novices, juniors, intermediates and seniors) will be given 15 minutes with any fitting supplies other than electrical. They will also be allowed up to 3 other registered exhibitors to help them control the animal. The exhibitors may not give verbal or physical instructions to the exhibitor. Showmanship Classes: (Ages as of Jan. 1, 2012) Novice 9-11, Junior 12 – 14, Intermediate 15 – 17, Senior 18 – 21 Pee Wee Showmanship Competition The Pee Wee class will be held at 2:30pm on Saturday. Entries will be accepted at the show for this class only. Safety Waivers must be signed. Participants must show a calf that is already entered in the Western Ontario 4-H Beef Invitational. There is no entry fee and all participants will receive a gift for participating. Ages 8 and under as of January 1, 2012. Conformation Competition The Conformation Competition will begin at 9:00am Sunday, starting with Market Heifers then Market Steers. Market Heifers and Steers will be shown by hip height. The Heifer show will commence directly after the Grand Champion Market Animal class, starting with Calves (Jan 1 – March 31, 2012), Jr. Yearling (April 1 – Dec 31, 2011), Senior Yearling (Jan.1 – March 31, 2011), and Cows with calves at side shown at our show in 2004 - 2011 (cows are not eligible for Grand Champion). Those competitors with more than one animal will receive a score for the highest placing entry. Dress Code Contestants are required to wear dark pants and suitable footwear. No Blue Jeans, Running Shoes, Or Hats Allowed In The Show Ring. T-shirts will be supplied to all competitors. Please include your T-shirt size on the entry form. Herdsperson Competition 4-H Clubs, Counties, and Farms are encouraged to work together on a display. A Herdsman Award will be given out to an exhibitor/club/county selected for their sportsmanship and display throughout the event. Sickness of Calves If your 4-H project becomes ill or dies between the entry deadline and the competition day, you will be ineligible to compete in the show. *Note* All calves will be inspected upon arrival for Ringworm or any other infectious contagious diseases. Any animals exhibiting signs of such diseases will be asked to leave the grounds immediately. Calf Tags All animals competing must have a CCIA Tag. Any animal without a tag will not be allowed on the premises and will be asked to leave the competition immediately. Professionalism Any clipping, conditioning, or grooming MUST be done by the competitors. The committee has the right to DISQUALIFY exhibitors from the show, and future shows, if they do not follow this rule. Please keep in mind the 4-H Motto, “Learn to do by Doing”. Drenching is STRICTY PROHIBITED unless under vet care! Hay/Straw/Feed Any hay, straw and feed are the responsibility of the competitor. Shavings are also allowed but no Bark Pen of Three Judging will be based on the most uniform group showing the best beef qualities. Move in time will be the same as for the show cattle. All entries are subject to the General Rules and Regulations and the Dry fit rules apply. Cattle may be clipped prior to arrival at the grounds, however NO electrical devises allowed in preparing the animals for judging. Exhibitors are required to provide necessary equipment for feeding and watering. Exhibitor must identify the three members of the pen on a separate entry form. Animals entered in the actual show are not to be used in the Pen of 3 there will be a separate group of 3 for show animals. Pot Luck Dinner There will be a family “Pot luck” dinner on the Saturday evening after the showmanship classes are completed (approx 6pm). All exhibitors are invited to bring their families and join the committee, the sponsors, and the volunteers for dinner. If you and your family are interested please bring something to BBQ for your family (i.e. hamburgers, steak) and either a salad or dessert to share. (BBQ’s will be provided) Western Ontario 4-H Beef Invitational Auction There will be a silent auction held all day Saturday and Sunday to help support the show. Please take a look at the items as there will be many up for auction and all proceeds will go right back into the show. Accommodations Competitors are to make their own accommodation arrangements. Sorry for any inconvenience Spaces are available for trailers if you wish to camp at a price of $20 for the weekend, this includes water and hydro. Payment is made to David Carson Farms. The Committee will not be responsible for the supervision of competitors or competitor calves. We recommend that each group/county have at least one chaperone. Absolutely no alcohol or narcotics are permitted. Anyone caught will be excused from the competition. General Prize Money - Paid in finals of each division only Showmanship - 1st – $40, 2nd – $35, 3rd – $30, 4th – $25, 5th – $20 (all remaining participants receive $10.00) Conformation - 1st – $35, 2nd – $30, 3rd – $25, 4th – $20, 5th – $15 (all remaining participants receive $10.00) Awards for each Division Champion and Reserve.
