Abstract: Informed consent is a relatively new concept, both in medicine and
research. This presentation will trace informed consent from its earliest sprouts in
scandal through its current regulatory and social conventions and will end with
some speculation about possible future directions.

Abstract: This presentation aims to provide information to clinical research
professionals when setting up a risk management (RM) plan. Adapting the
Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO)
model can help any organization to develop effective control strategies.

Humanized SCID Mice: Bridging Bench and Bedside
Jennifer F. Moffat, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology and
Immunology, SUNY Upstate Medical University
Abstract: Humanized mouse models are an essential aspect of translational studies
that bridge medicinal chemistry and vaccine candidates with human clinical trials
for new antiviral drugs and vaccines. The NIH has an integrated system, which
includes both academic and industry labs, that supports translational projects all the
way through FDA approval.

The History of Pediatric ALL: How we have Reached the Current
Survival Rates
Dr. Andrea Dvorak, SUNY Upstate Medical University, Department of Pediatrics
Abstract: The goal of this talk is to review the research that has led to the good
outcomes that we currently have achieved in the treatment of Pediatric Acute
Lymphoblastic Leukemia. I will also explore the current research and where the
treatment is headed.

Nosocomial Infection and Why it is Important to Research

Abstract: Nosocomial infection is a hot topic today with so much focus on the cost
of healthcare and moving patients in and out of a hospitals as soon as possible.
Research data supports those decisions. There are many different forms of research
involved in this process. Our role as patients, nurses, doctors and research
professionals can contribute to the overall outcome if we are aware of the impact.

Evidence Based Nursing in Practice at Crouse Hospital

Abstract: An overview of the history, concepts and process of evidence based
nursing. Identification of current strategies for researching studies that have been
conducted in controlled circumstances that provide strong evidence to support
practice decisions. Understanding of how EBN is implemented, evaluated, and
sustained at the bedside, with examples in practice at Crouse Hospital.
