TRANSLATION & INTERPRETATION WORKSHOPS
The translation and interpretation workshops for the winter quarter are designed for
freelance translators and interpreters or those interested in exploring the fields. The
workshops qualify for ATA continuing education credit. Students do not need to be
accepted into a degree or certificate program at University College in order to enroll in
the workshops. The workshops may not be taken for University College credit.
Note-taking for Interpreters (language generic) - CRN 4288
Wednesday, 6-9 pm on January 9 and January 16, 2007
This short course reviews the Why, What, and How of note-taking for professional
interpreters. Both beginning and experienced interpreters are encouraged to participate in
what will be a combination of instruction and practical exercises.
Proofreading for Translators (language generic) - CRN 4525
Tuesday, 6-8 pm on January 29, February 5, and February 12
This workshop is designed for both new and experienced translators who are interested in
expanding the array of services they currently provide. Using real-life examples, the
participants will learn practical skills to proofread online and printed documents; they
will also learn mark-up tools and proofreader's marks. Emphasis is placed on the
difference between editing and proofreading in the translation process.
Error analysis in English>Spanish translations (language specific) - CRN 4526
Thursday, 6-8 pm on January 31, February 7, and February 14
This hands-on workshop focuses on the most common errors in English into Spanish
translations - false cognates, grammar, syntax, capitalization, spelling, etc. The workshop
will involve the presentation and analysis of error types in translation, as well as actual
practice editing short passages. The processes and mechanics of editing will be
introduced and the workshop is designed for translators who would like to learn to
identify and avoid common translation mistakes. Upon completion of the workshop, the
student will gain practical skills to apply in translation and self-editing.
Spanish Punctuation for Translators: Rules and Tips (language specific) - CRN 4527
Tuesday, 6-8 pm on February 19, February 26, and March 4
This workshop is designed for translators who would like to improve their knowledge of
punctuation rules in Spanish. Students will be presented with examples of correct usage
for the most common punctuation marks, as well as common errors found in Spanish
translations. Examples of "foreign" punctuation rules and the lack of proper punctuation
in printed material will be reviewed and discussed. Upon completion of this hands-on
workshop, students will have an understanding of Spanish punctuation rules and their
correct application in the translation of texts.
