Guide to Waste Disposal Charges
Sort and SAVE $
Effective 1 July 2015
Waste charges in the ACT are designed to encourage users to recycle. You can reduce or
avoid waste charges by sorting and removing recyclables and reusables before disposal.
Household Waste
The weighbridge operators calculate charges by assessing the weight or volume of your load.
Loads greater than 0.5 tonne will attract the ‘per tonne’ rate, whereas loads less than 0.5
tonne will be calculated based on volume.




0.5 tonne or more - $87.05 per tonne
Small (up to a sedan boot)- $12.50
Medium (up to a sedan with a trailer, a utility, or a wagon) - $24.95
Large (up to a utility or wagon with a trailer; or a sedan with a caged trailer) - $37.45
Domestic Asbestos Waste
Domestic quantities of asbestos are accepted at the Mugga Lane and Mitchell Resource
Management Centres free of charge. Asbestos material must be double wrapped, sealed in
heavy duty plastic and identified to facility operators.
The law requires you to engage a licensed asbestos removalist to remove asbestos from
your house.
Asbestos loads greater than 250 kg or in a package larger than 80 cm x 80 cm will be treated
as commercial loads (refer commercial waste charges section).
Specific Charge Items
In addition to the general domestic waste charges, the following items are chargeable:
Tyres (light vehicles only)
and Mattresses

Tyre – whole, clean and
without rims

Tyre – whole, dirty or with

You can reduce or avoid waste disposal charges by taking your recyclable materials to the
government provided Recycling Drop-off Centres and Resource Management Centres. Many
specialised businesses and charities also take recyclable and reusable materials.
