The Global Control of FMD – Tools, Ideas and Ideals
Call for Presentations!
We welcome proposals for presentations in all disciplines relating to FMD control: reviews and primary research
in the field or laboratory, and from any region of the globe. .
You are welcome to propose a poster or oral presentation, to participate in a debate, or give a Keynote address.
Oral presentations, debates, and keynote address slots will be limited and selected for the relevance and
importance to the theme of the Session. Poster spaces are not (currently) limited.
If you wish to make a presentation to the Open Session, please indicate your intention (and those of others

Tuesday
Opening
Session 1: Global FMD control: opportunities and constraints
D1
Papers on scale of problem, impact of FMD, virus ecosystems based approaches,
options for regional control, long term projections.
Session 2: Vaccination: overcoming constraints
Issues here: increasing efficiency of conventional vaccines to break transmission/reduce
loss
- overcoming antigenic variation
- selection of adjuvants, achieving long term immunity
-stability for field use
-coverage – rethinking population immunity and coverage
Session 3: Biosecurity and buy-in: stakeholder support and critical control
points in the livestock marketing chain
Issues here:
- how can stakeholder commitment to biosecurity, vaccination , reporting, etc be
achieved?
- working with market forces to address critical control points
- increasing access of owners to quality FMD vaccines
- lessons learnt from control programs targeting high risk practises
The Global Control of FMD – tools, ideas and ideals
iii
Session 4: Measuring progress and keeping ahead of the (epidemic) wave
- how should we monitor the performance of FMD control – national, regional, global?
- emerging FMDV threats: experience and opportunities for detecting FMDV threats
- informatics for action: who needs to know?
- auditing preparedness
- risk based approach in monitoring
Frenkel lecture : FMD vaccine development - past and future
Wednesday
D2
Recent advances: epidemiology, informatics and reporting, control options
evaluations, potential impact of new tools in FMD control, surveillance
Session 5: offered papers
Session 6: Poster Session
Session 7: Diagnostics: a new era in access to high performance diagnostics?
Issues:
- FMDV confirmation and typing: a new era in access to quality lab tests for FMDV?
- time to replace shipment of live viruses for FMDV confirmation/typing?
- the role of the national and regional Reference lab in the new arena for FMDV
diagnostics
- test-and-move? : issues in measuring immunity and protection in control programs
- measuring vaccination performance and stability in the field

 how can we measure capacity to mount emergency responses?
 vaccine banks - rolling banks, virtual banks, regional banks
 global support capacity for designing national programs
 hot-spots: need for extra resources and capacity?
