STALLION BREEDING CONTRACT
THREE RIDGES FARM
This STALLION BREEDING CONTRACT for the breeding season of 2008 is made and
entered into and between Mike and Leslie Knick of Three Ridges Farm, hereinafterdesignated Breeder, and _________________________ hereinafter designated Mare
Owner. Mare Owner agrees to breed by artificial insemination only:

EXCEPTIONS
This contract is subject to the following conditions:
1. The balance of the Mare Owners account must be paid in full when the mare is
picked up. Mare Owner may not remove mare from Breeder’s possession until all
expenses are paid in full, including veterinarian and miscellaneous expenses.
2. Breeder agrees to provide suitable facilities for the care and feed of mare and/or foal
while in Breeder’s custody. Mare owner agrees to pay for care and feed at $8 per day
and for a mare with foal $10/day.
3. Breeder will exercise judgment consistent with recognized standards in care and
supervision of mare and/or foal. Breeder assumes responsibility for normal breeding
conditions and administration of medical care as deemed necessary for the health and
safety of the mare and/or foal. Mare Owner will pay all veterinarian and farrier
expenses.
4. Mares that are not halter broke will not be accepted.
5. The mare shall be in a healthy and sound breeding condition, free from infections. A
current negative Coggins Test, photo copy of registration papers, and a health, worming
and immunization record must accompany each mare; if they do not, Breeder’s
veterinarian will examine and /or test mare at Mare Owner’s expense. Breeder reserves
the right to refuse mare if mare is not in satisfactory condition.
6. Breeder agrees breed diligently try to settle mare; however if mare fails to settle, for
any reason, Mare Owner will hold Breeder Blameless. Mare Owner agrees to give
Breeder ample opportunity to settle mare, including a minimum of 3 breeding cycles.
The Breeder shall prepare each mare for breeding and shall conduct the breeding and
post breeding care. Breeder shall exercise reasonable judgment in the breeding, care,
and supervision of the mare; however, Mare Owner waives all claims against the
Breeder for the sickness, injury or death of the mare and her offspring from
matters beyond Breeder’s reasonable control or resulting despite the rendering of
reasonable and ordinary care
7. If mare should die or become unfit for breeding, mare owner may transfer stud
service to another mare that is acceptable to the stallion owner for a period not to
exceed 2 years from original booking. A written request for transfer must be submitted
to stallion owner within 30 days of anticipated breeding.
8. This contract contains a ‘Live Foal Guarantee’. A live foal is described as a foal that
stands and nurses without assistance and lives for 24 hours. If a foal is born dead there
are return privileges for the next breeding season only if Breeder is notified within 15
days and receives a veterinarian’s statement confirming death. If after being
pronounced ‘safe in foal’, the mare should miscarry, abort or prove barren after leaving
the Breeder’s premises, Mare Owner has the privilege to return her for rebreeding during
the current breeding season of February 15 through August 15, or the following year
(2009).
9. A ‘Breeder’s Certificate’ will be issued for the foal conceived by this mating when
stallion fee, veterinarian expenses and all other expenses have been paid in full and,
when mare has produced a live foal that stands and nurses by this mating.
11. It is further agreed that should the stallion die, be sold by the owner, or become unfit
for service, prior to settling the mare, the mare owner has the option to select another
stallion on the Farm to service the mare or receive a refund of the stud fee only.
12. This contract is entered into in the State of Virginia and will be interpreted and
enforced under the laws of that state. If any clause in this contract, the breaching party
shall pay for the others court costs and attorney’s fees related to such breach.
13. This Contract represents the entire agreement between the parties. No other
agreements or promises, verbal or implied are included unless specifically stated in this
written Contract.
When Mare Owner and Breeder sign this Contract, it will then be binding on both parties,
subject to the above terms and conditions.
