27th ANNUAL SUMMER RESEARCH TRAINING FELLOWSHIP The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine announces the availability of a research training program for outstanding high school students with a strong interest in science. A Fellowship Stipend of $1,500 will be paid for the 8 week period beginning Monday, June 11, 2012 and ending on Friday, August 3, 2012. The student will work in the laboratory under the supervision of a qualified investigator on a project of mutual interest. The training session will also consist of assigned readings and participation in laboratory discussions of other related research topics. This program affords the opportunity of gaining extensive state of the art training in an area of interest in a university research setting. General areas of interest include: cancer biology, immunology, molecular biology, molecular genetics, mechanisms of pathogenesis, neurosciences and others. Eligibility: Applicants must be at least 16 years of age by June 1 and have taken chemistry. In addition, the student should have completed a science course with a laboratory (preferably chemistry). All students with a strong interest in science who meet these criteria are strongly urged to apply. Application: Each application should consist of: 1) Completed application form 2) 2 letters of recommendation - one from a teacher who taught the student in a laboratory course, and one personal reference. 3) Personal written statement from the student which includes a description of a)future career goals, b)why you would like to participate in this program and c)what you hope to achieve by participating in the program. Selection: Finalists will be selected on the basis of the above information and contacted to schedule personal interviews with the selection committee. Final awards will be based on the results of this interview.
