National Honor Society
NHS CRITERIA
Read the following criteria carefully. You MUST meet all criteria to be eligible for consideration. Use this sheet as a reference
when completing the candidate support sheet.
Scholarship
A student must have a 3.5 accumulated Grade Point Average (GPA) to have an opportunity to be in the National Honor Society.
A further demonstration of scholarship is a 200-300 word essay to be submitted with your application.
Service
A student must have completed 50 hours of community service from the beginning of his or her freshman year. These hours
must be completed prior to when the selection application is due. The student may count 5 hours of service from a school
extracurricular organization such as an athletic team, drama production or pep band. All extracurricular hours must be
completed with an organization that has been officially recognized by the Reynoldsburg Board of Education. A co-curricular
activity, one that students earn grades for participation (for example, marching band), do not count towards service. Family
members cannot verify the service for the student.


Anything done without payment of any kind to benefit other people in the community. If you received anything in return
for your time, it is NOT community service. (i.e. grades, money, admission to an event, food/dinner)
50 service hours are needed to be considered for admission.

Examples of community service include:
o Volunteering; i.e. COSI, hospital, senior center, shelters, etc.
o Babysitting; i.e. church nursery, PTA meetings, etc.
o Formal tutoring; i.e. elementary schools, high schools
o Community events; i.e. set up, working at, clean up, etc.

The following are not considered community service:
o R.I.S.K.
o Group membership; i.e. youth group, etc.
o Babysitting; i.e. family, neighbors, etc.
o Informal tutoring; i.e. friends, etc.
o Fundraising activities
o Family obligations; i.e. mowing grass, housework, etc.
NO more than 20 hours.
NO more than 5 hours.
Character
A student who has received an in-school or out-of-school suspension, violated the law, or has been caught violating the
Academic Code of Integrity cannot be eligible for induction on his/her first opportunity. The student will be considered for the
next induction if he/she has not had any further violations.

Character must be verified
by an administrator.
NO substantiated incidents of breaking school or community rules/laws.
o Examples include:
 Cheating, fighting, out of school suspension, Wednesday school, skipping, etc.
Students must select two separate qualities for character and provide a specific example(s) as to how they have met each
of the character standards. BOTH examples must come from the school setting. The students must have each of the
character standards they have selected verified by the school personnel. Students cannot use family members to verify this
information.
Under the National Honor Society guidelines a student is considered to have acceptable character standards if he/she exercises
the following qualities: PICK TWO SEPARATE QUALITIES AND PLACE THE TITLE IN THE QUALITY BOX
 Takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously
 Consistently exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior
 Upholds principles of morality and ethics
 Cooperates by complying with school regulations concerning property, programs, office, halls, etc.
 Demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and reliability
 Shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others
 Follows the Academic Code of Integrity and all school rules
 Actively helps rid the school of bad influences
Leadership

Leadership Positions (minimum of 2)
o Examples include:
 Team captain, club officer, committee chairperson, etc.
 Raised funds, increased membership, ran monthly meetings, etc.
Students must select two separate qualities for leadership and provide a specific example(s) as to how they have met
each of the leadership standards. NO more than one example can come from outside the school setting. The students must
have each of the leadership standards they have selected verified by the school personnel, or, if using an example outside the
school setting, an adult who can attest to these statements. Students cannot use family members to verify this information.
Under the National Honor Society guidelines a student is considered to have acceptable leadership standards if he/she
exercises the following qualities: PICK TWO SEPARATE QUALITIES AND PLACE THE TITLE IN THE QUALITY BOX
 Is resourceful in proposing new solutions to problems and making suggestions
 Exercises positive influence on peers in upholding school ideals
 Is able to delegate responsibilities
 Exemplifies positive attitudes
 Inspires positive behavior in others
 Demonstrates academic initiative
 Successfully holds school and/or community offices or positions of responsibility, conducts business efficiently and
effectively and is reliable and dependable without prodding
 Demonstrates leadership in the classroom, at work, and in school or community activities
 Is dependable in any responsibility accepted
