I hope that your time studying Philosophy at MMU will be exciting. In the first year, our aim is to help you acquire some fundamental knowledge of philosophy and, as importantly, to develop some fundamental philosophical skills. Philosophy is an activity in which we try to understand ourselves and our world. Philosophers do not do this by employing scientific methods or common sense, but through a combination of reasoning and imagination. Learning how to reason and think imaginatively yet cogently is a vital skill: it takes time and needs a lot of practice with other people, in discussion, debate, suggestion and questioning. To help you develop this skill you will find that your tutors will put a lot of emphasis on encouraging you to discuss with each other and with them the texts you are reading. We are sure that you will find this experience of doing philosophy enjoyable and rewarding. Pens and notebook/paper for note-taking only. No projects, but students are encouraged to read a selection of texts from the indicative reading lists for Level 4 Philosophy.
