LINCOLN NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT-ATHLETES and Activities: CODE OF CONDUCT Lincoln Northeast High School views athletic participation as a privilege. An athlete earns that privilege in two ways, through academic scholarship and "good conduct". Good conduct may be defined as; behavior that reflects positively on the school, the team, the athlete's family, their community and on themselves. PHILOSOPHICAL BELIEFS: The purpose of the LNE Code of Conduct is: A. To promote and encourage a strong commitment to academics and athletic performance. B. To promote and encourage students to conduct themselves in a manner which brings credit to the student, their family, team, school, and community. C. To promote and encourage the development of self-discipline and high academic-athletic expectations. THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES WILL BE IN EFFECT AS ESTABLISHED BY THE LPS SCHOOL CALENDAR FROM THE FIRST FALL SPORT PRACTICE TO THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL. ACADEMIC STANDARDS: The following standards must be met in order for a student to be eligible for athletic competition: A. Must have passed a minimum of 20 hours the preceding semester. B. Maintain enrollment in a minimum of 30 hours during the semester of competition. Exception: A Senior who is on schedule to graduate at the end of the school year must be enrolled in at least 20 credit hours per semester. C. Any student failing in excess of one class will not be allowed to compete. Exceptions: 1. Seniors on schedule to graduate enrolled in 20 credit hours must be passing ALL classes. 2. Students carrying 30 or more credit hours will have two weeks to raise failing grades to passing before being declared ineligible for competition. 3. Students that continue to be in excess of one failing grade after two weeks will be suspended from contests only, will report to the athletic office after school for one hour prior to practice to raise failing grades, and will continue to practice at coaches’ discretion until all academic standards are met. Grades will be monitored every two weeks and end of each semester using Pinnacle. D. A student that is deficient of the 20 credit hours requirement may have their eligibility reviewed and may be placed on an Athletic Contract by the athletic administration. E. An Athletic Contract will only be offered once to a student for academic or citizenship standards during a student’s high school career. THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES WILL BE IN EFFECT AS ESTABLISHED BY THE LPS SCHOOL CALENDAR FROM THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL TO THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL. ATTENDANCE STANDARDS: In order for a student to be eligible for athletic competition, the following standards must be met: A. Truancies: 1st Truancy: Coach’s/Sponsor’s Intervention 2nd Truancy: Coach’s/Sponsor’s Intervention 3rd Truancy: Athletic Office Intervention Student will immediately be suspended from participation until truancies have been cleared and a written note from athletic office has been issued to participant and coach. A truancy agreement may be issued if truancies cannot be cleared. 4th Truancy: Athletic Office Intervention A student in violation of a truancy agreement will not be allowed to participate until truancies have been cleared and a written note from the athletic office has been issued to the participant and coach. Suspension from further participation may occur if truancies have not been cleared. B. A student must be in attendance for all scheduled class periods in order to participate in any practice or contest that day. 1. Exceptions: medical appointments, school business/activities and prearranged absences by the attendance office or school administration. 2. Coaches/Sponsors will receive a weekly attendance report on Monday from the athletic office. Students have the responsibility to have truancies cleared by Thursday of that week with the Attendance Office. A parent and/or school staff, whichever applies, must clear truancies. THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES WILL BE IN EFFECT AS ESTABLISHED BY THE NSAA GUIDELINES AND LPS POLICIES 5480 AND 6740 FROM THE FIRST FALL PRACTICE AFTER ENTERING LINCOLN NORTHEAST THROUGH THE END OF THE STUDENT’S CAREER AT NORTHEAST. CITIZENSHIP STANDARDS: Northeast student-athletes are expected to display character: respect, responsibility, integrity, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, determination and dedication. A. A student may not participate in practices, contests or activities while serving an out-of-school suspension. B. Students may not possess or consume alcohol, tobacco, drugs or violate LPS Responsibilities of Students G & H. LPS Policy 6740 Defines “Possession” includes having control of a substance or also includes being in the same area where the substance is present and no responsible adult is present and responsible for the substance. Before an athlete is reinstated eligible the athlete and their parent/guardian together will complete the internet course “Life of an Athlete” www.lifeofanathlete.com/couurses.aspx in the athletic office or with a parent or coach. C. Students cited or referred (referred as a juvenile citation) for illegal activities in or out of school during the school year and/or during the summer. CONSEQUENCES FOR VIOLATION OF CITIZENSHIP STANDARDS: Self reporting – Students in violation of citizenship standards, but self report their first violation to the athletic administration may have their consequences reduced depending on the severity of the violation. 1st Offense: The student may be suspended from participation in athletic contests or activities for a period of up to 25% of the contests of the current or upcoming season. Coach/sponsor may require attendance and participation in practice during the suspension. A SCIP referral will be made for the use of alcohol or drugs. (SCIP: School/Community Intervention Program) 2nd Offense: The student may be suspended from participation for the remainder of the current season and may include the next calendar season. However, upon successful completion of a recognized treatment program, the student may be reinstated as eligible for the next sport or activity season, in the current school year. The cost of said treatment shall be the responsibility of the student’s family. The student will NOT be allowed to participate in any practice or contest until after the student has successfully completed the treatment program. 3rd Offense: The student may be excluded from athletic or activity participation for up to one calendar year from the date of the finding or violation. Students out of season, but in violation of the citizenship standards during the school year may have consequences applied during the student’s next season of participation. This may also include consequences carried over and applied during the student’s next school year. A student that exceeds three CITIZENSHIP STANDARDS offenses may have their eligibility reviewed and may be placed on an Athletic Contract by the athletic administration. An Athletic Contract will only be offered once to a student for academic or citizenship standards during a student’s high school career. Students that exceed a third offense may have their eligibility reviewed by an administration review committee. This board would be made up of Athletic Director, Associate Principal or Principal, Coach and Counselor. This committee would review and determine status of student’s future eligibility. Severity of the offense or pattern of offenses will be reviewed. Consequences may include loss of eligibility for the remainder of their high school career. Coaches may have additional team rules/guidelines that athletes will be expected to follow. Appeals may be made through the athletic office.
