ABSTRACT

Inclusion of transition metal elements into organic scaffolds allows the hybridization of the interesting physical characteristics of metal complexes such as electronic, optical and magnetic properties with the solubility and processability inherent to the organic-based molecules. This seminar highlights recent progress in the development of some multifunctional organometallic complexes and polymers which can exhibit easily tunable luminescent and electronic properties. Considerable focus is placed on the design strategies towards the tuning capability of phosphorescence emission color and optical bandgap of these luminescent metal-organic materials, and the evaluation of their suitability as emitters in light-emitting applications, optical power limiters for sensor protection, semiconductors in organometallic photovoltaic cells for solar power generation and polymer precursors to magnetic metal alloy nanoparticles. The approaches based on structural modification of the organic chromophore to achieve multiple-color phosphorescence emission and to tune the photovoltaic properties of these functional organometallic materials will be presented.

Wai-Yeung Wong was born in Hong Kong. He obtained a

B.Sc.(Hons.) degree from the University of Hong Kong, and went on to complete his Ph.D. there under the supervision of Prof. Wing-Tak Wong. After his postdoctoral stay at Texas A&M University under the direction of Prof. F. Albert Cotton, he worked in the groups of Profs. The Lord Jack Lewis (FRS) and Paul R. Raithby at the University of Cambridge as a Croucher Research

Fellow. He joined the Hong Kong Baptist University as an

Assistant Professor in 1998 and was promoted to Professor of Chemistry in 2007. He has a distinguished publication record of over 245 publications in refereed journals and more than 10 (co-)authored books. His current research spans chemistry, polymer and materials sciences. Specific areas of interest are the design and synthesis of luminescent metal-organic compounds and functional metallopolymers for OLED, PLED and solar cell applications, nanomaterials and X-ray crystallography. He serves on the editorial board of several international journals including Journal of Organometallic Chemistry,

Macromolecular Rapid Communications, and Journal of

Inorganic & Organometallic Polymers & Materials, etc.
