DEPARTMENT OF SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION
General Information
The Department of Soil and Water Conservation was established in 1964 in
recognition of critical importance to conserve the soil and water resources on this
island. The graduate program at M.S. level was initiated in 1974 and then Ph.D.
program was added in 1987. This department is one of the sole department in the
whole country.
Teaching Emphases
The undergraduate courses are divided into five major fields, which are
fundamental courses, conservation of environment and ecology, water resource
engineering, slopeland engineering and planning and design for soil and water

Research Areas and Highlights
Soil Erosion, Landslide and Slope Stability Protection
Studies on soil Erodibility and soil loss prediction and effects of crop covering
and mulching on the properties of slopeland soils. Main efforts are concentrated on
relation between root characteristics of vegetation and shear strength of the soil,
analysis and control of landslides, impact on slope stability of slopeland disturbance
and development, slopeland protection technology.
Sediment and Torrent Control Engineering
It deals with estimation, observation and monitoring of stream sedimentation
problems, investigations of properties and causes of debris flows, scouring, system
planning of the check dams, stream stabilization and improvement methods. Flood
control with watershed conservation measures. Measures in sediment and torrent
control.
Slopeland Conservation
Land use problems and solution development, planning and design for
slopeland conservation. Application of appropriate techniques in slopeland
restoration.
Watershed Management
Studies involve the effectiveness of watershed management, control of reservoir
sediment sources, effects of land uses on runoff quantity and timing in small
watersheds, effects of slopeland development and conservation practices on
streamflow and sediment yields from watersheds, estimation of water resources
conservation efficiency by forests. Planning, implementation, monitoring and
evaluation of watershed conservation measures.
Windbreak and Sand Stabilization
Focus on the relationship between different types of windbreak and wind
velocity in the coastland, wind reduction efficiency of the different windbreak canopy
to wind velocity.

Prospective
Forming a Highest Area for Soil and Water Conservation Researches
Seeking excellent teachers and student in order to foster talented person.
Improving teaching and research in order to promote the academic level and studying
atmosphere
Enhancing Service and Information Provision
Promoting the establishment of soil and water conservation research and
information center in order to provide the information and technologies in the field of
soil and water conservation.
Enhancing Research Extension and Cooperation
Coordination with the international science and technology promotion, we will
recommend our colleague go abroad to do further study. In the mean while we will
invite the erudite person joining our department in order to enhance our teachers’
lineup. Encouraging teacher to participate the research plan and social service.
Increasing Teaching and Researching Facilities
Enlarging the department space in order to improve our teaching and research
environment. Increasing the budget in order to by more precision instrument, books
and journal.
