In the nineteenth century in particular, such was the reputation of excellence of the workshops in Le Mans as to attract many stained glass artists from Europe to the Sarthe area. Today, the Université du Maine plays a dominant role in the field of historical research and teaching in heritage. WHO IS THE COURSE AIMED AT ? This course is aimed at university students and students in continuing education, including foreign students : teaching will be given with simultaneous translation into English. This innovative course interactively combines the history of stained glass with its application in workshops and visits to sites. OBJECTIVES Participants will widen their historical knowledge of stained glass and cultural exchange in nineteenth century Europe and become familiar with stained glass art techniques through participation in workshops. Nineteenth-century stained glass : a question of Europe (3 days). The role of the nineteenth century in the history of stained glass. Stained glass and its uses in a European context. Le Mans as the stained glass capital of France. The contribution of Henry Gérente, the English stained-glass painter. The arrival of the Kuchelbecker family of German stained-glass painters. Guided talks on churches and other sites : The contribution of German an English glass painters to French techniques (4 days). The Cathedral of Le Mans and Tessé museum. The following churches : Notre-Dame de la Couture, Le Mans, Ballon, Nogent le Bernard, Ecommoy, Mayet, Laigné en Belin, Ruillé sur Loir, La Ferté-Bernard and Yvré l’Evêque. Initiation to stained glass art : (2 days in alternation with visits). Members of the profession and artists will be invited to a day for open discussion, followed by a round-up (1 day).
