Reference Criteria
As part of our compliancy and safeguarding standards, Key Stage Teacher Supply has a responsibility to its
Schools and Nurseries to provide only those Teachers, Teaching Assistants and Nursery Nurses who have the
knowledge, expertise and total professionalism to work effectively with the children in their care.
References play an important part in our stringent recruitment and selection process as we need to determine your
suitability to work with children and young adults. Key Stage Teacher Supply requires at least 3 satisfactory. In
addition, there may be circumstances that we will need further references to satisfy our recruitment decision. This will
be discussed in the interview.
The criteria for our references are:










We need to cover your work history and/ or academic history for the last 5 years.
At least 1 reference must be from your current or last school/nursery or teaching agency.
At least 1 reference must be relevant to the position for which you are applying.
There are occasions that you may use an ex- Headteacher, if this is the case then we can accept their
personal e-mail but we shall need to contact the school to verify that you were working/ on placement there .
If you are an NQT a minimum of 1 reference must be from your placement, preferably from your last 2
placements.
If you have just completed your Teaching Assistant course a minimum of 1 reference must be from your
student placement, preferably from your last 2 placements.
A character reference is acceptable for your 2nd reference. The referee must be a professional person who has
known you for at least 5 years. A family member is NOT acceptable.
An academic reference from your university or college is acceptable for your 3rd reference.
If you have been undertaking any voluntary work at a school we will need a reference from the organization.
Agreed References/Compromise agreement. If you have an agreed reference we need to establish the

In your opinion does this person display a high degree of honesty and integrity?
What was the reason for leaving?
Do you know of any reason why this person should not be engaged to work with Children?
Has the applicant been the subject of any child protection concern or disciplinary procedure?
Do you feel that the applicant is suitable for employment as a Supply Teacher?
Under the Conduct Regulations 2003, we are required to offer to show our clients schools both
references and qualifications.
7. Does the referee give permission for this reference to be disclosed to the relevant 3 rd parties.






If you have had a referral then it is our Company Policy that we can not register you until we
have a clear outcome.
If you undertake any paid or unpaid work outside of school that involves working with children or young
adults we will need to obtain a reference from the establishment.
Any gaps in your employment history need to be qualified. If there are any gaps of 3 months or more, we will
need to verify these by an academic or character reference.
You must provide the exact month and year that you were employed or in full-time education.
You must provide the full name, title, postal address and telephone number of the reference and if applicable
their correct e-mail address.
You must make sure that your referee is aware that you are using them as a reference. (Often we find that
we do not receive a reference due the candidate not asking – it is only courteous to do so.)
We aim to complete your registration within 2 weeks and in order to do this we need you to thoroughly complete
the reference page at the back of the application form. . See the above criteria.
If you are unable to do this then please contact your branch for advice as we may have to delay your appointment
until you have provided the complete information.
Additional Information
As part of our rigorous recruitment procedure and our policy to comply with the ‘Safe- guarding
Regulation’ set by the DfE, we need to be aware of your full employment history including any
career breaks or gaps. Please can you complete this form as this will be used as part of your
registration.
