DESCRIPTION
This is work administering libraries and performing related library services. Work occurs
in a variety of settings, including public libraries, schools, museums, and government
agencies and institutions. Tasks may include administering library services; setting
policies for library personnel, collections and users; hiring, training and evaluating
personnel; administering budgets; selecting, acquiring, cataloging, classifying,
circulating, and maintaining library materials; and furnishing reference, bibliographical,
and readers' advisory services. Incumbents may perform in-depth, strategic research,
and compile, synthesize, analyze, and edit information and may set up or work with
databases and information systems to catalog and access bibliographic, circulation and
other information.
Some positions in this occupation may be responsible for coordinating work and
supervising employees.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Supervises employees by assigning work, reviewing progress and assessing
performance.
Organizes collections of books, publications, documents, audiovisual aids, and other
materials for convenient access.
Reviews and evaluates a variety of resources to select and order books, periodicals,
audiovisual aids, and other materials for acquisition.
Assists patrons in selecting books and informational material and in research problems.
Classifies, and catalogs books, publications, films, audiovisual aids, and other library
materials.

Researches, retrieves, and disseminates information from books, periodicals, reference
materials or and databases in response to requests.
Manages library resources stored in files, on film, or in computer databases.
Reviews, compiles, and publishes lists of library materials, including bibliographies and
book reviews, to notify users.
Explains use of library facilities, resources, equipment, and services and provides
information about library use and policies.
Manages library programs.
Assembles and arranges display materials.
Directs and trains library staff in duties, including ordering, receiving, shelving,
researching, cataloging, and equipment use.
Keys information into computer to store or search for selected material or data bases.
Directs and handles circulation activities, including borrower registration, borrower
authentication, materials check out and check in, reserves and interlibrary loan
activities; manages overdue notices, keeps appropriate circulation records.
Compiles lists of overdue materials and notifies borrowers.
Confers with stakeholders to develop, plan and conduct programs and services.
