Language Institute Thammasat University EL 341 English for Economists 2 Course Outline 1/2015 Course Description El 341 aims to further expand students’ exploration into the language of economics in English by developing key academic skills such as listening to lectures; writing summaries and reports; and critical thinking skills. Course Objectives to provide students with a snapshot of the history of economics; the different economic systems, and its impact on our lives to raise awareness of the types of vocabulary used in economics; their form, variation, context of use and pronunciation to develop students ability to read and understand a variety of text types such as newspaper reports, academic texts and editorials for students to be able to identify main points in articles and lectures and take effective notes for students to use skills of paraphrasing and summary writing to produce wellstructured, coherent reports and assignments for students to able to effectively structure and administer logical academic presentations for students to have a broader understanding of the international world of economics through leading seminars, watching videos and producing newspapers Course Material Materials for the course will come from a number of sources and there is no text book for students to purchase. All materials will be provided by the instructor.
