WELCOME TO THE SPANKY FRACTAL DATABASE ======================================== This is a collection of fractal's and fractal related material for free distribution on the net. Most of the software was gathered from various ftp sites on the internet and it is generally freeware or shareware. Please abide by the guidelines set down in the individual packages. This database is also accessable through the WWW using LYNX or the NCSA Mosaic client. The URL is http://spanky.triumf.ca/ The fractal images found here in the [pub.fractals.images.noel] directory were created by me using the fractint formula system. They can be freely distributed, but I would appreciate a reference tag. This is especially true if it's published in any way. Money is always a nice gesture at times like that, or at least a copy or two for posterity. The fractals in the [pub.fractals.images.others] directory are those that I have archived from the alt.binaries.pictures.fractals newsgroup. I haven't spoken to the posters on the subject of reuse, but I'm sure they would feel as I do. Their names are given in the index file in that directory. This is not a complete archive or is it intended to be. I don't see all the images posted and I only keep the ones I like, so I'm sorry if i've overlooked some of your favourites. HOW TO NAVIGATE SPANKY ============================ SPANKY is a VAX/VMS system and as a result has a directory structure that is quite foreign to most of you, so this next section is worth study. The VMS directory structure is quite simple once you know it. All directory specifications are delimited by open and closing square brackets as in [PUB] for example. Sub-directories are shown as files with the .DIR extension when listing directory contents. Sub-directories can be reached by adding them as an extension to the directory string specifier. They must be delimited by the "." decimal or period character as in [PUB.FRACTALS] or maybe [PUB.FRACTALS.IMAGES] or [PUB.FRACTALS.PROGRAMS]. Note that the .DIR file extension is dropped when specifying them in directory strings. You can also go up and down the directory tree without specifying the full string. If your in the [PUB.FRACTALS] directory and see that it has a PARAMS.DIR file indicating a sub-directory, you can reach it by using the: cd [.PARAMS] and it will use the parent directory as implied. You can also go up a level by using the "-" minus sign character. If your currently in [PUB.FRACTALS.DOCS] then: cd [-] will move you into the [PUB.FRACTALS] parent directory. WHAT'S THERE =================== I've started to accumulate a reasonable selection of fractal related programs and documents as well as images. It's all stuff that is available on the net but I thought it might be convienient if you could find it all in one place. If you know of worthwhile programs or articles that I haven't included and that are freely available then you could EMAIL me and tell me what it is and where I could find it. My address is noel@reg.triumf.ca I'll try and keep things reasonably up-to-date. I've put them all in associated sub-directories under the [PUB.FRACTALS] heading. Get the INDEX.DOC file in this directory for a complete and up-todate listing of what's available on this site. Enjoy and discover. Noel@reg.triumf.ca
