After eventually finding the ground with the help of a passing referee, the boys warmed up, ready to put their training ground work into practice.
FC Unsworth was a good team that the Eagles had played the previous season and so we were ready for a good challenge. The Game started well for The Lions, with goals from Luke Smith, (a great header), and
Luke Evans. The boys showed some of the passing game they displayed consistently last season and played with confidence, switching the play regularly and passing with accuracy. However, by half time the score was
2-2 despite the Lions dominating the game.
The second half saw Chaddy Park step up a gear and eliminate the silly mistakes that had let Unsworth back into the game. Ethan displayed great hold up play up front, along with intelligent distribution, earning him a second man of the match award for the season. Luke Smith was brave in the air and direct in his play. In midfield, Luke Evans was vibrant, buzzing between players with the ball seemingly tied to his feet and showing better distribution of his passing. His second goal, an arrowed effort into the top left corner was a joy to behold. Lewis Unwin showed greater confidence when running with the ball down the left wing, using both feet well and scoring a great long range goal for his efforts. Joe Gregory worked hard in the centre and linked the play brilliantly, also scoring an intelligent goal with some great communication. Josef Rimmer worked much harder on the wing and showed his great skill in running at players and putting in killer crosses.
Andrew Gregory was dreadfully unlucky not to score and again showed better positional play and good vision with his passing. At the back, George Lengden got to most high ball on the bounce effectively and began plenty of passing movements from the back, while Callum Pollard won many major tackles coolly and played the ball with positive effect. In goal, Alex Knight made several excellent saves and showed great calmness with the high balls he had to deal with.
The final score was a convincing 6 – 3, and was a performance that had been on the cards after Thursday night’s training. Well done, boys, on a great, entertaining display. Next week is the first round of the subsidiary cup.
Lenny.
