The 16th edition of the Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival was held 23 – 28
October 2012. As in the past, the festival was organized by JSAF, o. s. The 17th annual festival
will take place on the same dates next year, 23 – 28 October 2013.
Over the course of its existence, the Jihlava festival has become an indispensable Czech and worldwide
documentary event, and has actively contributed to the promotion and distributions of documentary films.
The Jihlava festival is a co-founder and member of the prestigious union of six important European
documentary festivals, Doc Alliance
“This year was one of the best in the festival’s 16-year history. The excellent programme was appreciated by
jurors and audiences alike, and the festival was attended by the largest number of accredited participants and
outstanding guests in history. This poses a great challenge for the next, 17th edition,” says festival director
Marek Hovorka.

THE 2012 JIHLAVA IDFF IN NUMBERS

WINNING FILMS
CZECH JOY
Award for best Czech documentary film of 2012
The jury recognized Fortress (Pevnost, Czech Republic, 2012) by the directing duo of Klára
Tasovská and Lukáš Kokeš as a work that, although it does not look at the Czech Republic,
offers Czechs an important message.
The documentary presents a visit to the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (a.k.a. Trans-Dniestr)
as a trip to a museum of communist totalitarianism. The country, whose independence has been
recognized by only a few other states, remains an isolated multi-ethnic enclave held together by an
authoritarian regime. In a country where you are only allowed to film out the window of a train, the
locals are afraid of being denounced but are glad to live in a comfortable refuge from the hectic
modern world, and songs on television celebrate the president.

The jury also awarded honourable mention to two films – Two Nil (Dva nula, Czech Republic,
2012) by director Pavel Abrahám and Stone Games (Hra o kámen, Czech Republic, 2012) by
director Jan Gebrt – for the meticulous and inventive approach to presenting two views of Czech
society.

BETWEEN THE SEAS
Award for the best Central and Eastern European documentary film of 2012
The jury for the Between the Seas section chose director Srdjan Keča’s Mirage (Great Britain,
Serbia, 2011) for its daring and inventive approach to filmmaking.
Dubai becomes the setting for an audiovisual meditation contrasting the majestic and exuberant
life of the big city with the uneasy and cheerless life of its inhabitants. The film captures Dubai after
the economic crisis has interrupted an era of feverish construction, and creates a delicate
impression where long rides through town alternate with close-ups of women lying on the beach
and images of sandstorms burying construction workers.

The jury’s honourable mention went to director Igor Bezinović’s Blockade (Blokada, Croatia,
2012) for achieving an exceptional level of quality within the framework of a classical observational
documentary as originally defined by John Grierson.

OPUS BONUM
Award for best international documentary film of 2012
As the sole juror of the Opus Bonum section, Belgian filmmaker Xavier Christiaens chose to
present the section’s award to director Maiko Endo’s Kuichisan (Japan, USA, 2011), among other
things for its multiple viewpoints and its fiery and intuitive approach, which with extreme sensitivity
takes a broad view of time and various ways of working with images.
This portrait of Okinawa, a Japanese island formerly home to an American military base, is
conceived as a young boy’s daydream-like wanderings, his attention randomly falling on various
objects and events. The film thus represents a bold victory of cinematic intuition over method and
order. The combination of 16mm black-and-white camera with colour images, a soundtrack
disconnected from the images, and the blurring of the boundaries between documentary and fiction
make this film an enigmatic but fascinating experience.

FASCINATIONS
Award for best experimental documentary film of 2012
The jury presented the award to director Robert Todd’s undergROWTH (USA, 2011), which they
appreciated for the fact that it does not work with the usual artistic tools of experimental film, but
instead modestly subordinates form to the message, which may just be the reason why the film
manages to enter a fascinating realm of poetry.
The movement of an owl’s head becomes inspiration for the camera’s movement in nature as it
shows the home of the Barred Owl, a nocturnal bird with distinctive colouring that we explore in
many different close-ups. Eternal rules of survival, related to their excellent vision in the dark, are
projected into meticulous observation of owl behaviour and movements that might represent
danger.

SPECTATORS PRIZE
The Spectators Prize went to director Adam Ol'ha’s New Life of a Family Album (Nový život,
Czech Republic, Slovakia, 2012).
In 2005, documentary filmmaker Adam Oľha’s father decided to leave his wife and six children in
order to start a new life. As the oldest of the siblings and the only remaining man in the family,
Adam explores his father’s old photographs, compares them with the present, and tries to discover
what led to such a radical decision. He traces his parents’ relationship from its beginnings, reveals
problems in communication between husband and wife at a particular time, and observes how they
are reflected in the lives of his sisters.

SPECIAL LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
At the festival’s closing ceremony, the lifetime achievement award went to Czech director Vojtěch
Jasný for never being afraid and always showing the authenticity of the world, in both his
documentary as well as fiction films.

SILVER EYE AWARD
The Institute of Documentary film presented the Silver Eye Award to three outstanding
documentaries in three categories from the East Silver market. This year, the Silver Eye Award
went to the best short documentary Cut-Paste (dir. Rafal Samusik, Poland, 2012), best mediumlength documentary We Will Be Happy One Day (dir. Pawel Wysoczański, Poland, 2012), and
best feature-length documentary Sofia’s Last Ambulance (dir. Ilian Metev, Bulgaria, Croatia,
2012), which stood out for its inventive and colourful style and for the unique way in which it
reflects society through the eye’s of one particular profession.
Honourable mention went to the energetic Slovak documentary The Gypsy Vote (Czech Republic,
Slovakia, 2012) by director Jaroslav Vojtek. The jurors particularly appreciated the film’s
exceptionally high-quality editing, large dose of humour, and unquestionably positive message.

RESPEKT AWARD
The Respekt Award for best domestic television, video on online reportage from the past year was
presented at the festival’s opening ceremony. Erik Tabery, editor-in-chief of the weekly news
Respekt magazine, announced the winner and presented the 2012 Respekt Award to Aneta
Snopová and Markéta Dobiášová from Czech Television for their investigative report Kauza Casa
(The Casa Affair) from the series Reportéři ČT.
2012 AWARD FOR THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FESTIVAL POSTER AND AUDIENCE AWARD
The film festival representatives who attended this year’s Festival Identity workshop chose the
poster from Lithuania’s 2012 Kino Pavasaris festival as the Most Beautiful Festival Poster from
2011 and 2012. Kino Pavasaris will this receive an opportunity to exhibit a retrospective of its
posters at the 2013 festival in Jihlava.
The same poster was also the winner of the Audience Award.

2012 JIHLAVA INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL
As in past years, the largest celebration of original documentary film in Central and Eastern Europe
presented a diverse range of Czech and foreign films, with many world, international, European,
and Czech premieres.
This year, the programme for film professionals again included a diverse range of events fro
filmmakers, producers, and film festival organizers.
The Emerging Producers workshop brought together talented European producers with film
professionals. The Inspiration Forum, organized by Filip Remunda, is a four-day meeting of
selected directors from around the world with notable individuals from outside of the film industry;
its aim was to initiate new topics in documentary film.
The Festival Identity workshop, intended for film festival organizers, provided a forum for people
to meet and develop various forms of cooperation. The Distribution Forum offered filmmakers a
chance to present their films-in-progress to distributors, sales representatives, television
purchasers, film festivals and other organizations.
The Visegrad Accelerator project brought together film professionals from the Visegrad countries.
The main objective of the East Silver market was to support and promote quality documentary film
from Central and Eastern Europe.
The participants in Ex Oriente Film, organized by the Institute of Documentary Film, brought 13
documentary projects to Jihlava for the second meeting of this yearlong workshop.
This year’s festival saw the sixth edition of the Media and Documentary seminar for students of
journalism of film theory who want to learn the specific features of writing about documentary film
in various forms of print media.
The festival’s rich accompanying programme includes concerts, theatre performances, author
readings, the first festival of documentary theatre, radio documentaries, and exhibitions. For the
third year, selected festival screenings were hold in the living rooms of selected Jihlava households
as part of Your Home Festival. As in the past, the docalliancefilms website (dafilms.com) acts as
a year-round gateway to documentary film.

SELECTED FESTIVAL GUESTS
The guests of the Inspiration Forum, a meeting of ten selected directors from around the world
with notable individuals from outside of the film community, were Chinese author Gao Xingjian,
Pakistani author Tariq Ali, and three members of the feminist group FEMEN, including Anna
Hutsol, who founded the group in 2008.
The Institute of Documentary Film and the Jihlava IDFF also presented a Master Class by original
Danish filmmaker Mads Brügger.
Director Jero Yun was personally present for the world premier of Looking for North Koreans, his
film about travelling along the border of North Korea and the chilling encounters with the country’s
inhabitants.
Laurens Drillich came to introduce Endemol, one of the world’s most important producers of
reality TV shows, to which the Jihlava IDFF has dedicated a regular section for three years.
Indian director Ray Sandeep presented the European premier of his most recent documentary
film, The Sound of Old Rooms, in the Opus Bonum section. Andrey Gryazev came to present
Tomorrow; his portrait of the extreme art group Vojna was well received at this year’s Berlinale.
Director Vojtěch Jasný was presented with a lifetime achievement award at the festival’s closing
ceremony.
The festival was also attended by most directors of the films in the Czech Joy section. In addition
to Lukáš Kokeš, director of the winning film Fortress, other participants included Jan Gebert,
Pavel Abrahám, Jan Gogola and Miroslav Janek.
PUBLISHING ACTIVITIES – MONOGRAPH ON CHRIS MARKER
The Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival, in collaboration with AMU Publishers, is
publishing a monograph on French director Chris Marker, written by film historian and Jihlava IDFF
selector David Čeněk. His original monograph is supplemented by texts written by foreign authors
– analyses of Marker’s films and the contexts in which they were created. The book also includes
two of Marker’s scripts for imaginary films. The book’s publication was inspired by a retrospective
of Marker’s films at the Jihlava festival. The book release party took place at the closing ceremony
of the 16th Jihlava IDFF.

is a competition section for the countries and nations of Central and Eastern Europe. It presents

Czech Joy
is not only a prestigious competition for the best Czech documentary, but also a celebration of the
diversity of Czech cinema.
Fascinations
is a competitive overview of experimental films that presents unique approaches to the depiction of
reality.
Transparent Being Alberto Cavalcanti
Alberto Cavalcanti was a leading representative of 1920s French avant-garde film and the director
of the most important post-war films in his native Brazil. His films made in England during the
1930s make him a legend of documentary film.
Tribute Ai Weiwei
“You’re in total isolation. And you don’t know how long you’re going to be there, but you truly
believe they can do anything to you. There’s no way to even question it. You’re not protected by
anything. Why am I here? Your mind is very uncertain of time. You become like mad. It’s very hard
for anyone. Even for people who have strong beliefs.” (Ai Weiwei)
Tribute Omar Amiralay
At a time when Syria is plunged into violence, we remember the work of this Syrian documentarian
and activist, who in the search of the origins of his country’s traditions discovered new symbols for
the civilizational and political conflicts of the Arab world.
Tribute Chris Marker
Chris Marker’s friend found the famous director and recluse’s lifeless body on the day of his 91st
birthday. His expansive and mysterious works radiate a deep mediation of our civilization and an
obsession with time, combined with an analysis between image and memory.
Special Event
Special Event is a selection of films that capture the current state of the world from various angles;
as much as it may seem that there is no common thread running through them, within the context
of Czech and international documentary filmmaking these are works that, for many different
reasons, cannot be overlooked.
Doc-fi
Doc-fi expresses the conviction that the boundary between documentary and fiction is porous; in
fact, that perhaps no such boundary exists at all – as shown by films whose „otherness“ alters our
understanding of cinema.
Reality TV
Reality.tv opens viewers‘ eyes to new television formats and presents the full range of current
forms of crossover genres such as docudrama, docusoap, reality show, and mockumentary.

Man in Revolt
By rebelling against the absurd conditions (whether social, political, or personal) that waste life, the
rebel shows a solidarity with others and encourages them to struggle for a more human world. “I

Democratic People’s Republic of Korea
This extraordinary section shows the way of life in North Korea, presenting unique local
documentary filmmaking. This may be our first look at how this country presents itself.
Czech View on the DPRK
“Oh, the horror! At this ghastly hour, an American aviator, pushed a button, and dropped bacteria
on Korea,” wrote the lyrical poet Jan Skácel in the service of communist propaganda.
Czechoslovak film took a similar approach to the first hot conflict of the Cold War: Hands off Korea!
Czech Landscape
It is not easy to paint a landscape despite the effort to grasp its variety. Selection of the most
interesting Czech documentaries.
Fascinations – Eprmntl.cz
Exprmntl.cz is a survey of the latest Czech experimental films that touch upon reality and never
cease in their search for new ways of expressing reality through classical and digital film.
Czech Television Presents
offers a selection of the most interesting documentaries produced by Czech Television, which
continues to play an important role in the creation and presentation of documentary film.
Lost Prints of FAMU
Lost Prints of FAMU is a unique section in which renowned Czech documentary filmmakers
present distinctive films by former classmates who took a different path in life after graduation and
for the most part do not work in documentary film. Personal memories write a different history.
Doc Alliance selection
Doc Alliance is the result of an international partnership including the Czech Republic (Jihlava),
Denmark (Copenhagen), France (Marseille), Germany (Leipzig), Poland (Warsaw), and
Switzerland (Nyon); in each country, the project presents three selected films in order to showcase
current trends in documentary film.
LUX Film Days
LUX Film Days is a section representing three films selected for the European Parliament LUX
prize. Through LUX Prize, the European Parliament casts an annual spotlight on films that explore
the questions of European identity.
Short Joy
Short Joy presents a selection of the best Czech and international documentary shorts –
consummate works exploring the possibilities and strengths of documentary film within a limited
time framework.
FAMU Presents
Films by promising students of FAMU.
Workshops
Workshops are a place where viewers can meet with filmmakers and their work, a studio where
images say even more because we can see them, talk about them, and ask about the films.
Day for Audiovisual Heritage
The festival thus joins in celebrating a holiday declared by UNESCO for 27 October in order to call
attention to the vulnerability of cinematographic memory.

INDUSTRY SECTION
The Industry Programme for supporting documentary film in Central and Eastern Europe
concluded on Sunday, and some 400 film professionals – directors, television producers and
purchasers from important European and American television stations, representatives from
foreign film festivals and funds, distributors, sales agents, and other guests – headed home.
EMERGING PRODUCERS
This was the first edition of this promotional and educational project aimed at bringing together
talented producers of documentary films from the EU. The workshop’s main goal is to bring
together talented European producers and film professionals, in particular those focused on
documentary cinema. We are convinced that this project will open up debate on the contemporary
European production system, its effectivity and its limitations, and we hope that the project will
succeed in identifying unused and as-of-yet undiscovered opportunities.
The project should also provide participating producers with information from the field of
audiovisual production, increase their familiarity with the film market, and provide them with an
opportunity to make contacts with producers from other countries, thus increasing the potential for
future European co-productions.
Emerging Producers is realized in collaboration with the Media Desk offices in the Czech Republic,
Denmark, Finland, Croatia, Cyprus, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Norway, Poland, Austria, Greece,
Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (Catalonia), and Switzerland, and MEDIA Antenna Torino.
The Czech Republic was represented by producer Hana Třeštíková; the main experts were Irena
Taskovski and Pablo Benzi.
INSPIRATION FORUM
This unique project, curated by Filip Remunda, takes a new approach to bringing together the film
and non-film world. Filmmakers work with each of the speakers in three phases in order to identify
potential topics for documentary films. The first phase is also open to the general public. This is the
first project of its kind at any film festival.
This year’s speakers were author and journalist Tariq Ali, Nobel Prize for literature laureate Gao
Xingjian, and three members of the Ukrainian feminist group FEMEN.
New topics were developed with each of the three guests in three stages:

Part 2 / Closed discussion among IF speakers and participants
Part 3 / One-on-one discussions between IF speakers and participants

FESTIVAL IDENTITY
The goal of the third edition of this workshop for festival directors, programming directors, and
commissioning editors was to provide a platform for sharing new information and for discussing
subjects that bring festivals together and also keep them apart.
This year, the workshop’s practical section was expanded to two days. The programme included
lectures and moderated discussions, as well as small meetings of groups of participants from
various festivals. The two-day seminar was divided into four thematic blocks and small discussion
groups.

DISTRIBUTION FORUM
The second edition of presentations of in-progress film projects for distributors, sales
representatives, television purchasers, film festivals and other organizations. This promotional
platform is focused on feature-length films with festival ambitions and on the search for ideal
distribution strategies. The forum presented European documentary films at various stages of
production of post-production. In 20- to 25-minute presentations, each film’s representative will
show excerpts from the existing footage; introduce the film’s subject, concept, and documentary
method; and summarize its financing and distribution status.
The Forum focused on the selected projects’ distribution aspects as well as on the filmmakers’
directorial and dramaturgical approaches. The presentations’ main audience consisted of
distributors, sales agents, commissioning editors, theatre owners, and festival programming
directors, who thus had an opportunity to discover and acquire new films for their distribution or
programming.
INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM AT THE 16TH JIHLAVA IDFF
East Silver
From 23 to 28 October, the 9th edition of the East Silver market presented 267 eastern European
documentary films completed in 2011/2012 that by IDF representatives carefully selected from
nearly 600 submitted films. In addition, the videotheque also included the 124 documentaries
screened at the Jihlava IDFF. Some 192 accredited film professionals – especially distributors,
sales agents, festival and television representatives, as well as producers and directors from
eastern Europe – came to use the well-insulated video booths and to attend dozens of previously
arranged meetings. Statistics confirm that, as in past year, East Silver enjoyed a great amount of
interest – this year, we registered 2,281 film viewings, and based on the number of requests for
sample DVDs, film professionals expressed an interest in 187 films.
Silver Eye Award
During each year’s Jihlava IDFF closing ceremony, the Institute of Documentary Film presents the
Silver Eye Award to three outstanding documentaries in three categories from the East Silver
market. This year, the Silver Eye Award went to the best short documentary Cut-Paste (dir. Rafal
Samusik, Poland, 2012), best medium-length documentary We Will Be Happy One Day (dir. Pawel
Wysoczański, Poland, 2012), and best feature-length documentary Sofia’s Last Ambulance (dir.

Ex Oriente Film
This year, Jihlava hosted the second part of the 10th anniversary Ex Oriente Film workshop, which
brings talented eastern European documentarians and producers to the Czech Republic. After a
June workshop in Roztoky near Prague, creative teams for 13 documentary projects from Bulgaria,
the Czech Republic, Poland, Croatia, Hungary, Slovenia, Latvia, Russia, Estonia, and Georgia
came together for another working week. During the workshop, participants focused in particular on
budget strategy, the legal aspects of co-production, and other issues related to writing, the
dynamics of the script, and the rough outlines of the edited product. Each day, they were guided by
experienced foreign and domestic instructors and guests, who also took time between lectures to
focus individual attention on the various projects.
