Thomas’ Calculus, 12 th Edition

Calculators: You will be allowed to use a calculator on exams in this course. You will not be allowed a graphing calculator. Please obtain a scientific calculator without graphing capabilities.

Prerequisites: MATH 261

Course Description: Continuation of Calculus of one variable. We will focus on techniques and applications of integration and on convergence and divergence of sequences and series.

Course Goals: Upon completion of this course students will be able to do the following:

Demonstrate applications of inductive and deductive reasoning.

Evaluate complex relations using symbolic abstraction and generalization.

Demonstrate problem solving using symbolic representation and manipulation.

Evaluation:

Labs: There are 24 labs. They will each be worth 10 points. You will be allowed to drop the lowest 4.

Quizzes: There will be 1 quiz worth 50 points.

Exams: There will be 4 mid-term exams worth 100 points each.

Final Exam: The final exam will be cumulative and will be worth 200 points. The final exam will take place on Monday May 13, 2013 at 9:00 am. Your final exam grade will be allowed to replace your lowest exam grade.

This amounts to 850 points for the class. Your grade will be determined using the following scale. This class will NOT be curved.

92% - 99% A

90% - 91% A–

83% - 86% B

80% - 82% B-

73% - 76% C

70% - 72% C-

63% - 66% D

60% - 62% D-

87% - 89% B+ 77% - 79% C+ 67% - 69% D+ < 60% F

Attendance: Students are expected to attend all class meetings and are responsible for all of the material covered. Any changes in this syllabus or in the scheduling of exams, assignments etc. will be announced during class meetings. Students who miss lecture are responsible for obtaining the notes from a classmate. Unless a valid excuse is presented in advance, a missed exam will receive a score of 0 points .

Only extreme situations with a documented excuse will allow a student to be excused from an exam. Commercial travel is not an excuse. No make-up quizzes will be given. No late homework will be accepted. Examine this syllabus carefully and plan

around exams. The schedule for the final exam will be strictly adhered to.
