Language and Culture in Dominica, Guadeloupe, & Martinique Dominica, Rugged and beautiful, Guadeloupe, the island of beautiful waters, and Martinique, the island of beautiful flowers, are volcanic islands overgrown by wild emerald tropical forest, surrounded by beaches of magical beauty. A Caribbean Odyssey Join the UCF Foreign Languages & Literatures Language and Culture Summer Program for three weeks in the Caribbean. The program is based in Guadeloupe and travels to diverse Caribbean islands of Creole and/or Francophone culture. This Language and Culture program is designed for students interested in the French language & culture, the Caribbean, the Creole cultures as well as the African Diaspora as areas of studies. The program will explore the differences and the similarities between the diverse Creole cultures of the Caribbean and will enable students with new perspectives on the francophone and creolophone cultures of the Caribbean. Dominica is known as "The Nature Island of the Caribbean". With an extensive and unspoiled rainforest, 365 rivers, one of the world's largest Boiling Lakes and a host of waterfalls. Originally inhabited by first the Arawaks and then the Carib Indians, the island was named the island 'Wai'tukubuli' or 'Tall is Her Body'. There are still about 3,000 Carib Indians, descendants of the original inhabitants of the island, who live in the Carib Territory. Guadeloupe is comprised of two islands, Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre. The local culture is diverse and well developed. From distinguished Nobel laureate authors to the creators of popular Zouk music, from legendary cuisiniéres (cooks) to artists of every description who create unique works in their ateliers (workshops), there is much to experience and celebrate in Guadeloupe. Martinique lies in the heart of the Caribbean Archipelago and is one of the many islands, which make up the group of Lesser Antilles, or "Breezy Islands." Historical sites include La Pagerie, where Napoléon's Empress Joséphine was born in 1763. Several literary and philosophical movements such as Négritude, Antillanité and Creolité emerged from this island, largely through the writings and the influence of renowned authors such as Aimé Césaire, Edouard Glissant and Patrick Chamoiseau.
