Additional budget for COST from FP7 The Committee welcomed the information from the European Commission DirectorateGeneral for Research and Innovation of the decision to allocate additional budget to COST, as provided for in the Specific Programme “Cooperation” of the FP7, and as recommended by the FP7 Mid-Term evaluation of COST in 2010. Of the total possible additional funds of up to EUR 40 million, EUR 30 million will be released to COST, which will raise the total budget for COST in FP7 to EUR 240 million. A further release of EUR 10 million will depend on the development within the EU budget. 1 COST, established in 1971, is an intergovernmental framework for cooperation and networking of European research activities. COST does not fund research itself, but supports networking activities such as meetings, conferences, short term scientific exchanges and outreach activities. COST receives financial support for its coordinating activities from the EU RTD Framework Programme (FP). 2 Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Republic of Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom; Israel (cooperating state). COST aims to remain a vital player for the development of the European Research Area and to contribute to the delivery of the Europe 2020 strategy and the goals of the Innovation Union. In this context the Committee also adopted a “COST Mission Statement” (doc. COST 4152/11) as the basis for the COST strategy to respond to the new challenges – while building upon its 40 years of successful history of implementing scientific cooperation and networking in Europe.
