Symbol Set Resources
Finding and Using Pictures for Communication and Learning
Symbols are pictures (or objects) that “stand for” a word or concept. They are used to create visual supports, including
picture schedules, communication books, and overlays for AAC devices.
There are many kinds of symbols, so find the ones that are meaningful to the student. Think about the size, format, colors,
and “transparency” (e.g., how clear or easy it is to understand meaning) of the pictures being used. For example, a student
might understand a digital picture of his mother better than a clip art picture of a woman with the word “mother” printed.
Resources for symbols include free symbol sets or search engines on the internet and “commercial” symbol sets that you
purchase and use from a CD-Rom. Below is a list of selected resources for symbols. It is not intended to be a comprehensive
listing, but a suggestion for getting started.
